The facility aims to simplify pension account registration by allowing users to complete the process through their smartphones instead of relying entirely on traditional account-opening procedures.

The development could make retirement planning more accessible to people who prefer digital financial services.

However, applicants should check the availability of the facility, eligibility requirements and the steps displayed on their chosen platform before beginning registration.

NPS Tatkal Facility Makes Account Opening Easier

The National Pension System is a government-regulated retirement savings scheme designed to help individuals build a retirement corpus through regular contributions.

The scheme is regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA).

Under the digital account-opening process, eligible users can access the relevant NPS registration service through supported platforms.

PhonePe and BHIM are among the digital payment applications associated with the Tatkal facility, making the process more convenient for users who manage their financial activities on mobile phones.

The Tatkal facility is intended to simplify onboarding, but applicants must still provide accurate personal information and complete the required verification steps.

The exact process may vary depending on the application and the registration service available to the user.

How to Open an NPS Account in Three Steps

The account-opening process through the NPS Tatkal facility is designed to be completed in three main steps.

Users should open the participating app, provide the requested details, select their bank account and make the initial contribution through UPI.

The first step is to open BHIM or PhonePe and locate the NPS Tatkal option, if available.

Applicants must then enter the required information and select an eligible bank account linked to the service.

The final step is to make the contribution as instructed in the app.

Users should follow the on-screen prompts to complete verification and registration and check that their account has been successfully created.

 Minimum Contribution and Eligible Banks

The minimum contribution for opening an NPS Tier-I account through the reported digital facility is Rs 500, while the minimum for a Tier-II account is Rs 250.

Applicants should verify the amount applicable to their selected account type before making a payment.

For BHIM, the facility has been reported as available to customers of participating banks, including State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and IndusInd Bank.

Availability through PhonePe and the participating bank list may differ, so users should check the latest options in their app.

The digital onboarding process is intended to reduce paperwork by using existing bank and KYC information where supported.

Applicants should still ensure that their details are accurate and that they complete any additional verification required.

What Investors Should Know Before Opening an NPS Account

The National Pension System is a market-linked retirement savings scheme, meaning returns are not guaranteed and depend on investment choices and market performance.

Account holders should understand the risks, contribution rules and withdrawal conditions before investing.

Tier-I is the primary retirement account and has restrictions on withdrawals under NPS rules.

Tier-II is an optional investment account with more flexible withdrawals and generally requires an active Tier-I account.

The Tatkal facility is a digital route to open an NPS account, not a separate pension scheme.

It aims to make retirement savings easier to access through familiar UPI applications, but applicants should review the scheme’s terms before making their first contribution.
