Thousands of Indian students in the US are preparing to start their careers as the graduation season brings new job opportunities.
While many students are focused on finding work through Optional Practical Training (OPT), they should also pay close attention to an important immigration rule.
Failing to follow address update requirements can create problems for visa status and future immigration applications.

Why Updating Your Address Is Important
Students studying in the US on an F-1 visa can work through Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows them to gain work experience for up to 12 months after completing their studies.
However, whenever a student changes their residential address, they must inform the authorities. This is a mandatory requirement and not just a formality.
According to the US Department of Homeland Security, international students must report any change in personal or employment information to their college’s Designated School Official (DSO) within 10 days.
The DSO then updates the information in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
Many students move to a different city or state after getting a job. In such cases, updating the new address immediately is essential.
Missing the 10-Day Deadline Can Cause Problems
US immigration rules require foreign students to report any address change within 10 days.
If a student fails to do this, their F-1 visa status could be affected. This may also create difficulties in future immigration processes, including H-1B visa applications.
Apart from informing the college, students must also notify US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) about their new address within the same 10-day period.
How Students Can Update Their Address
Students have multiple options to update their address information:
Through the SEVP Portal
Students whose address changes after completing OPT can update their information directly through the SEVP portal.
Contact the College DSO
Students can also inform their college’s Designated School Official (DSO), who can update the records in SEVIS on their behalf.
Submit Form AR-11
All foreign nationals living in the United States are required to submit Form AR-11 to USCIS within 10 days of changing their address.
Home Address and Work Address Are Different
Students should understand the difference between a home address and a company address.
A home address refers to the place where the student lives. This information must always remain updated in SEVIS records.
A company address refers to the workplace location. If there is any change in employment location, students must inform their DSO within 10 days and provide the company name along with the updated office address.
Keeping address records updated may seem like a small task, but it is an important requirement for maintaining legal status in the US and avoiding future visa-related complications.
