Several important immigration and visa changes are coming into effect in September.
Indians planning to study, work, or settle abroad should carefully check the latest rules before submitting an application.
Changes are expected in countries including the US, Canada, Belgium, and Cyprus.
These include new visa fees, financial requirements for students, updated immigration forms, and additional medical documents.
New H-1B and L-1 Fees in the US
From September 9, some US companies will have to pay additional fees when extending H-1B and L-1 status.
The additional fee will be $4,000 for H-1B cases and $4,500 for L-1 cases.
The rule will apply to certain companies that have at least 50 employees in the US and where more than 50% of their workforce holds H-1B, L-1A, or L-1B status.
The fee may also apply when an employee continues working for the same employer after an extension.
New Rules for Students
From September 15, changes are also expected for F-1 students and J-1 exchange visitors in the US.
Under the new system, students will receive a fixed date on their I-94, generally based on the length of their program and capped at four years.
Those who need to remain in the US for longer may have to apply for an extension of stay. Students should carefully check their I-20 or DS-2019 documents, OPT status, and travel plans.
Canada Raises Financial Requirement
Canada is also changing its study permit requirements. From September 1, international students will need to show higher proof of funds when applying for a study permit.
This means Indian students planning to study in Canada may need to provide stronger evidence that they have enough money to cover their expenses.
In the US, new versions of Forms I-539 and I-765 will be required from September 15.
Applications submitted using older versions after the deadline could be rejected by USCIS.
Green Card Applications Face More Scrutiny
From September 18, changes to public charge rules are expected to increase scrutiny of some green card applicants.
Officials may consider factors such as an applicant’s age, health, family situation, finances, education, and skills.
Certain government benefits may also be considered during the assessment. Applicants will also need to use a new version of Form I-485 from September 18.
New Fees in Belgium
The Flanders region of Belgium will introduce a €180 fee for each single permit application from September 1.
The charge will apply to both new applications and renewals. In most cases, the employer or company is expected to pay the fee.
Cyprus Introduces Medical Requirements
Cyprus is also introducing additional medical document requirements for certain immigration permits from September 1.
Some applicants will need blood test reports for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, and syphilis. A chest X-ray for tuberculosis screening may also be required.
These documents may need to be officially legalized. However, some people who already hold limited-period residence permits may be exempt from the new requirements.
