Savings Account Minimum Balance rules allow banks to set minimum balance requirements for certain types of accounts, but customers must be informed about the applicable conditions and charges.

The rules differ depending on the type of account and banking product.

The Reserve Bank of India has issued guidelines governing minimum balance requirements and charges for non-maintenance.

Customers should therefore check the specific terms applicable to their savings account before assuming that every account requires a minimum balance.

Savings Account Minimum Balance rules

Banks can prescribe a minimum balance for regular savings accounts according to their account terms.

However, the bank is required to inform customers about the minimum balance requirement when the account is opened.

If the minimum balance requirement is changed later, the bank must provide advance notice to the customer.

The customer should get sufficient time to bring the balance back to the required level.

Banks cannot simply impose charges without informing customers about the applicable minimum balance requirement and the consequences of failing to maintain it.

What happens if minimum balance is not maintained

If a customer does not maintain the required balance, the bank may levy charges according to its applicable policy and RBI guidelines.

The charges should be communicated to the account holder.

Banks are also required to ensure that such charges do not turn a savings account balance negative solely because of the levy of minimum-balance charges.

Customers should check their bank’s schedule of charges to understand the minimum balance requirement and the amount that can be charged for non-maintenance.

Zero-balance accounts have different rules

Not every savings account has a minimum balance requirement. Basic Savings Bank Deposit Accounts, commonly known as zero-balance accounts, are designed to provide basic banking facilities without requiring customers to maintain a minimum balance.

Customers who want to avoid minimum-balance requirements can check whether they are eligible for a zero-balance account or another account type offered by their bank.

However, the services, transaction limits and other conditions can differ between account types.

Customers should therefore read the account terms before choosing or converting an account.

Check your bank account conditions

The minimum balance requirement can vary between banks and even between different savings account products offered by the same bank.

Customers should check their account statement, bank website or applicable schedule of charges for the exact requirement.

Savings Account Minimum Balance rules are particularly important for customers who maintain low balances, as non-maintenance can result in charges when the account is subject to such a requirement.

Before opening a new savings account, customers should compare the minimum balance requirement, charges and available services rather than assuming that all savings accounts follow the same conditions.
