Post Office RD Scheme is an option for people who want to build savings through regular monthly deposits instead of investing a large amount at once.

Under the five-year Recurring Deposit scheme, investors deposit a fixed amount every month and earn interest at the rate applicable when the account is opened.

For October to December 2026, the Post Office five-year RD scheme offers an interest rate of 6.7% per annum, compounded quarterly.

The final maturity amount depends on the monthly deposit, the account’s interest rate and whether all instalments are paid on time.

Post Office RD Scheme: Interest Rate and Tenure

The National Savings Recurring Deposit Account, commonly called the Post Office RD, has a fixed tenure of five years, or 60 monthly instalments.

The minimum monthly deposit is Rs 100, and deposits must generally be made in multiples of Rs 10. There is no maximum deposit limit under the scheme.

At the current rate of 6.7% per annum, the interest is compounded quarterly. Once an account is opened, its applicable interest rate remains fixed for the account’s original five-year term, even if the government changes rates for new accounts later.

Investors should check the latest official notification before opening an account because small-savings interest rates are reviewed every quarter.

How Much Money Can You Get After Five Years?

The maturity amount increases with the monthly contribution. Here are estimated returns for different deposit amounts at an annual interest rate of 6.7%, compounded quarterly.

If you deposit Rs 500 per month, your total contribution over five years will be Rs 30,000. The estimated maturity amount is around Rs 35,683, including approximately Rs 5,683 in interest.

A monthly deposit of Rs 1,000 means you contribute Rs 60,000 over 60 months. At the same rate, the estimated maturity amount is around Rs 71,366, giving you approximately Rs 11,366 in interest.

For a monthly deposit of Rs 2,000, the total contribution reaches Rs 1.20 lakh. The estimated maturity value is around Rs 1,42,732, including approximately Rs 22,732 in interest.

Those depositing Rs 5,000 every month contribute Rs 3 lakh over five years. The estimated maturity amount is around Rs 3,56,829, which includes approximately Rs 56,829 in interest.

These figures are estimates based on the stated interest rate and quarterly compounding. The final amount may vary slightly due to calculation and rounding rules.

Who Should Consider a Post Office RD Account?

The scheme may suit salaried employees, families saving for future expenses and people who prefer a disciplined savings routine.

Making a small deposit every month can help build a financial reserve without requiring a large initial investment.

It can also be useful for people saving towards planned expenses such as education costs, household purchases or other goals expected in five years.

However, investors should consider whether they can maintain regular deposits throughout the full term.

The Post Office RD is different from a market-linked investment because its return follows the notified interest rate rather than stock market movements.

However, the interest earned is taxable under the applicable income-tax rules, so investors should consider tax treatment when estimating their effective return.

Important Rules to Know Before Investing

The Post Office RD requires regular monthly instalments. Missing payments may attract a default fee, and repeated defaults can affect the account’s operation under the scheme rules.

Investors should confirm the applicable penalty and regularisation requirements at their post office.

Premature closure is subject to the scheme’s conditions and may result in a lower return than holding the account until maturity.

Investors should understand these rules before committing money they may need in the short term.

After completing the original five-year term, the account may be extended for another five years under the applicable rules.

Investors should confirm the extension process and interest treatment with India Post before making a decision.

Overall, the Post Office RD offers a structured way to save regularly over five years.

Choosing the right monthly amount and maintaining timely deposits can help investors work towards a predictable savings goal.
