What Has Changed in the UK Graduate Visa Rules?Which Universities Will Qualify for the Two-Year Visa? Why the Announcement Matters for Indian Students UK Also Expands High Potential Individual VisaWhat Students Planning for 2027 Should Do

Under the UK government’s Budget 2026 announcement, eligible graduates from universities with strong compliance records and positive employment outcomes will be able to stay in the country for two years after completing their studies.

The announcement is particularly relevant for students considering UK universities for the 2027 intake.

Earlier plans had proposed reducing the Graduate visa duration from two years to 18 months for most bachelor’s and master’s graduates applying from January 1, 2027.

However, the revised approach creates a route for graduates of qualifying universities to retain the two-year post-study stay.

The government has not yet published the complete eligibility criteria or the list of universities that will qualify.

What Has Changed in the UK Graduate Visa Rules?

The UK government has announced that the Graduate visa will remain valid for two years for graduates from high-compliance universities where there are strong labour market outcomes.

The decision modifies the earlier plan to reduce the post-study work period to 18 months from January 2027.

Under that plan, international students completing eligible undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses would have received a shorter period to remain in the UK.

The new announcement means that the duration will depend on whether the graduate’s university meets the government’s compliance and employment-outcome requirements.

Doctoral graduates will continue to be eligible for a three-year Graduate visa under the existing framework.

Which Universities Will Qualify for the Two-Year Visa?

The government has referred to universities with strong compliance records and positive labour market outcomes. However, it has not yet explained the exact standards that institutions must meet.

Important details remain pending, including how universities will be assessed, what employment outcomes will be considered and how the eligible institutions will be identified.

This means Indian students should not assume that every UK university will qualify for the two-year Graduate visa. The final benefit will depend on the criteria announced by the UK authorities.

University compliance and graduate employment performance could therefore become important considerations for students comparing institutions for future admissions.

Why the Announcement Matters for Indian Students

The Graduate visa is an important part of the UK’s appeal to international students because it provides an opportunity to remain in the country after completing an eligible qualification.

Graduates can use this period to look for jobs, gain professional experience or work in the UK without first obtaining employer sponsorship under the Graduate route.

For Indian students, the difference between an 18-month and a two-year stay could influence university selection and career planning.

The additional time may provide more flexibility to explore employment opportunities and understand the requirements for switching to another eligible visa category.

Education experts quoted in the coverage have also highlighted that students may increasingly need to assess universities based on their compliance records, industry connections and graduate employment prospects, rather than relying only on rankings.

UK Also Expands High Potential Individual Visa

The Budget announcement includes a separate change to the High Potential Individual (HPI) visa route.

The UK government plans to expand eligibility to graduates from institutions ranked among the world’s top 150, with a proportionate increase in the scheme’s cap.

The HPI visa and Graduate visa are separate immigration routes.

The Graduate visa is generally linked to completing an eligible course at a UK institution, while the HPI route is designed for graduates of qualifying overseas universities.

The government has also highlighted its intention to attract highly skilled international talent and support businesses that need specialist workers.

What Students Planning for 2027 Should Do

Students considering the UK for the September 2027 intake should follow official announcements before making university decisions based on the revised visa duration.

They should compare course quality, tuition fees, living expenses, employment opportunities and the institution’s compliance record.

The two-year Graduate visa should not be treated as guaranteed until the government publishes the eligibility requirements and confirms which universities qualify.

Under the existing rules, eligible bachelor’s and master’s graduates applying for the Graduate visa on or before December 31, 2026, can receive two years.

Applications submitted from January 1, 2027, are generally subject to an 18-month period, while doctoral graduates can receive three years.

The latest Budget announcement provides a potential exception for graduates of qualifying universities. Students should therefore check the latest UK Home Office guidance before applying.
