UPI, India’s most popular digital payment system, is set to become even more powerful.
A new change being discussed between NPCI and banks could allow UPI credit lines to offer an interest-free period, just like credit cards.
This move can make small, short-term loans easier and more affordable for everyday users.

How the New UPI Credit Feature Helps You
Imagine you need ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 urgently, but your bank balance is zero.
With a UPI credit line, the bank gives you a pre-approved amount that you can spend instantly using your UPI app.
Earlier, the biggest issue was that interest started charging from day one, which discouraged many users.
The upcoming change fixes this problem by allowing users to repay within a fixed time without paying any interest.
Interest-Free Period Like Credit Cards
Under the new system, users will get a grace period to repay the borrowed amount.
If repayment is done within the given time, no interest will be charged.
Interest will apply only if the payment is delayed beyond the deadline.
This makes UPI credit lines far more attractive and user-friendly, especially for short-term needs like groceries, bills, or emergency expenses.
A Credit Card Alternative for Millions
This feature is especially useful for people who don’t have a credit card.
UPI credit lines offer similar benefits such as easy access, interest-free days, and simple repayment, all through a mobile app.
Because UPI is already widely used, this option could reach users who were earlier excluded from traditional credit systems.
What’s the Current Status?
Some banks have already started offering this facility in limited form.
Yes Bank provides a 45-day interest-free period
Suryoday Small Finance Bank offers a 30-day interest-free period
These early models show that the system is already being tested and refined.
Why UPI Credit Lines Were Introduced
The UPI Credit Line was first announced by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das in April 2023 and officially launched in September 2023.
The goal was to provide easy and quick credit access to individuals and small businesses who do not have credit cards.
Users can get a credit limit of up to ₹5,000, and if the amount is repaid within the set time, no interest is charged at all.
With interest-free periods now coming into focus, UPI credit lines could soon become a game-changer for small, everyday borrowing in India.
