India’s largest bank, State Bank of India (SBI), regularly alerts its customers to stay safe from fraud and cybercrime.
Recently, SBI issued an important warning on its official X account (@TheOfficialSBI) about scammers creating fake websites that use SBI’s name and logo.
These websites may look genuine but are designed to steal banking information like login credentials, passwords, and OTPs.
SBI advises all customers to only use the official SBI website (https://bank.sbi/) or the official mobile app to avoid falling victim to these scams.
Why Scammers Create Fake Websites
Scammers create fake banking sites for one main reason: to steal money and sensitive data.
Some common tactics include:
Stealing your username, password, or OTP
Making unauthorized transactions from your account
Misusing your personal and financial information
These fake websites often appear as links sent through SMS, emails, or WhatsApp messages.
They usually use urgent or tempting messages to trick you into clicking quickly.
How to Spot a Fake SBI Website
Cybersecurity experts and SBI suggest the following:
Check the URL carefully – it should always start with https://bank.sbi/.
Never share passwords or OTPs via SMS, WhatsApp, or email.
Avoid clicking on suspicious or shortened links.
Do not download attachments or apps from unknown sources.
What to Do If You Clicked a Fake Site
If you accidentally entered your details on a suspicious website, act immediately:
Change your SBI password and MPIN right away.
Report the incident to your bank via phone or app.
Monitor your account for any unusual transactions.
File a complaint on the official cybercrime portal if necessary.
By staying cautious and verifying all links, you can protect yourself from phishing scams and online fraud.
