India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) has introduced a new savings account specially designed for Self Help Groups (SHGs).

This account comes with zero balance and is aimed at improving financial access in rural India, especially for women-led groups.

It is also linked to government programmes like the National Rural Livelihoods Mission, which supports rural livelihoods.

The goal is simple—make banking easy, affordable, and accessible for small groups working at the grassroots level.

Key Features That Make This Account Attractive

This SHG savings account is designed to be simple and low-cost.

There is no need to maintain a minimum balance, and there are no charges for opening or closing the account.

Groups can keep up to ₹2 lakh in the account.

Cash deposits and withdrawals are free, and interest is paid every quarter.

The account also offers one free physical statement every month.

Another big advantage is easy access.

The account can be managed through post offices and even local postmen or Gramin Dak Sevaks, making it highly accessible in villages.

Interest Rates and Basic Charges

The interest rates are similar to regular savings accounts.

Up to ₹1 lakh: 2% per year

₹1 lakh to ₹2 lakh: 2.25% per year

Interest is credited every three months.

While most services are free, a few small charges apply. For example, SMS alerts cost ₹0.25 per message (with a quarterly limit). Some services like balance certificates or transactions through non-IPPB networks may also have minimal fees.

How to Open the Account

Opening this account is straightforward.

You just need to visit the nearest post office or IPPB outlet with basic documents like Aadhaar, PAN, group proof, and photographs.

You can fill out the form either digitally or on paper and submit it along with the required documents.

Features That Are Not Included

To keep the account simple, some advanced features are not available.

These include mobile banking, nomination facility, bill payments, standing instructions, and virtual debit cards.

This ensures the account remains focused on basic savings and group transactions.

Who Should Consider This Account?

This account is ideal for Self Help Groups involved in small-scale activities.

This includes work like tailoring, handicrafts, dairy farming, small retail shops, embroidery, and other local businesses.

With zero balance requirements and easy access, it provides a safe and reliable way for these groups to manage their money.

A Step Towards Financial Inclusion

With its wide network covering over 5.5 lakh villages and towns, IPPB is making banking more inclusive.

This new SHG account is another step towards empowering rural communities by giving them simple and secure financial tools.

For many groups, this could be the first step towards better financial management and growth.
