The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has given a big relief to many employees by extending the deadline for activating the Universal Account Number (UAN) and linking it with Aadhaar. The new deadline is now 30 June 2025, instead of the earlier 31 May.
This extension is especially helpful for unorganized sector and contract workers who haven’t yet activated their UAN or were facing issues meeting the earlier deadline. With more time, they can now also benefit from the Employees’ Life Insurance (ELI) scheme.
What Is the ELI or EDLI Scheme?
The Employees’ Life Insurance (ELI) scheme is officially known as the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) scheme.
It provides life insurance to employees who are members of the EPF. If an employee dies while still in service, a lump sum insurance amount—up to ₹7 lakh—is paid to the nominee.
However, to receive this benefit, the employee’s UAN must be active and linked to Aadhaar.
Why and How to Activate Your UAN?
Activating your UAN and linking it with Aadhaar is important to access EPF services like life insurance (EDLI), pension (EPS), PF withdrawal, and other claims. It ensures your identity is verified and all records are up to date with the EPFO.
Employees who haven’t yet activated their UAN—especially those whose Aadhaar is not linked or those added by an employer without activation—must do so immediately.
Steps to Activate UAN:
Visit the EPFO member portal: https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in
Click on “Activate UAN”
Enter your UAN, name, date of birth, Aadhaar number, and mobile number
Verify using the OTP sent to your mobile
Set up your login credentials
Once your UAN is active, you can easily check your PF balance, claim status, and update KYC details online.
