The Income Tax Department has confirmed that the last date to file income tax returns (ITR) for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26) is September 15, 2025. This means the deadline will not be extended further.

At the same time, the department has denied fake reports claiming that the deadline has been shifted to September 30, 2025.

Officials have clearly advised taxpayers to ignore fake news and only trust updates from the official X (Twitter) handle of the Income Tax Department.

Different Deadlines for Audit and Non-Audit Taxpayers

For non-audit taxpayers, today (September 15, 2025) is the final date to file their ITR. Missing the deadline may lead to penalties. Earlier, the department had already given a 45-day extension, moving the due date from July 30, 2025, to September 15, 2025.

For taxpayers whose accounts require auditing—such as companies, proprietorships, and working partners in a firm—the last date remains October 31, 2025.

Their audit report must be submitted by September 30, 2025. So far, there has been no announcement of any further extension for these deadline

Relief Through Delay Waiver Option

The Income Tax Department has also provided relief for those who cannot file their ITR on time due to unavoidable situations. A condonation of delay option has been activated on the e-filing portal.

This facility is meant for cases such as hospitalization, death of a family member, or other serious emergencies. In such situations, taxpayers can apply for forgiveness of the delay.

If the request is approved, they will be allowed to file their returns without paying any penalty.

However, to use this option, the taxpayer must submit valid evidence for the delay. This facility will remain available until the end of the assessment year.
