Indian Railways has made important changes to its ticket cancellation rules, and this time, it can directly affect your wallet.

If you often cancel train tickets, you need to be extra careful now.

The new rules will be rolled out between April 1 and April 15, 2026, and they mainly focus on confirmed tickets.

The closer you cancel your ticket to the train’s departure time, the higher the deduction will be.

New Cancellation Rules Explained

Under the updated system by Indian Railways, the refund you get will depend on how early you cancel your ticket.

More than 72 hours before departure:

You will get the maximum refund, with only a small charge deducted.

Between 72 hours and 24 hours:

Around 25% of the ticket fare will be deducted, along with a minimum fee.

Between 24 hours and 8 hours:

The deduction increases to 50% of the fare, meaning you get only half your money back.

No Refund in These Cases

If you cancel your ticket less than 8 hours before the train departs, you will not get any refund.

Earlier, passengers could cancel tickets up to 4 hours before departure without losing the full amount.

But now, the rules have become stricter, and the no-refund window has been extended to 8 hours.

Also, if you miss the train, refund options may depend on the TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) process, which can vary case by case.

What This Means for Passengers

These new rules clearly encourage passengers to plan better and cancel early if needed.

Last-minute cancellations will now cost more, making travel planning even more important.

In short, if you want to save money, try to cancel your ticket as early as possible under the new system.
