Millions of people across India use zero-balance bank accounts, especially in rural and semi-urban areas.
For all of them, the Reserve Bank of India has announced a big and welcome change.
RBI has relaxed several rules and expanded the list of free services so that banking becomes easier, cheaper, and more accessible for everyone.
These updates will make a huge difference for people who rely on digital payments and basic banking facilities.
Five Important Services Now Completely Free
RBI has made five major services free for all zero-balance account holders.
This means users can enjoy essential banking features without paying any fees.
Unlimited UPI and Digital Payments
Earlier, some banks counted UPI or other digital transfers as cash withdrawals and charged a fee.
Now, UPI, IMPS, NEFT, and RTGS will not be treated as withdrawals.
You can make unlimited digital transactions without paying anything.
Free Cash Withdrawals
Banks must now offer at least four free cash withdrawals every month.
These free withdrawals can be done from your bank’s ATM or even another bank’s ATM.
More Free Facilities for Every Zero-Balance Account
Free ATM/Debit Card
Until now, some banks charged an annual fee for ATM or debit cards.
Now, these cards will be issued free of cost, with no renewal charges.
Free Checkbook and Passbook
You will receive a free checkbook with at least 25 pages every year.
A free passbook or monthly statement will also be provided without any fee.
Unlimited Free Deposits
There is no limit on how many times you can deposit money into your zero-balance account.
All deposits will be free, with no restrictions or charges.
When Will These New Rules Start?
All these changes will officially take effect from April 1, 2026.
However, RBI has allowed banks to introduce these services earlier if they wish, so some banks may start offering these benefits even before the deadline.
