With rising temperatures and increasing use of air conditioners, coolers, and refrigerators, electricity bills have become a major concern for many households.

However, families that have installed rooftop solar panels under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana are getting relief from high electricity expenses.

Under this scheme, eligible households can get up to 300 units of free electricity every month along with government subsidy support for installing solar panels.

The application process is simple, and interested people can apply online through the official PM Surya Ghar portal.

PM Surya Ghar Scheme: Target of 1 Crore Houses

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2024 with the aim of installing rooftop solar panels in 1 crore homes across India.

According to government data, by March 2026, around 26.19 lakh houses had already benefited from the scheme.

The number of households adopting rooftop solar is increasing continuously.

The scheme is designed to encourage clean energy use while helping families reduce their dependence on traditional electricity sources.

How Much Subsidy Can You Get?

Under the scheme, households can receive a subsidy for installing rooftop solar panels.

The subsidy amount depends on the capacity of the solar system installed.

The government provides a maximum subsidy of up to ₹78,000, which is directly transferred to the beneficiary’s bank account.

The subsidy structure is broadly as follows:

1 to 2 kW solar system: Suitable for households using around 0 to 150 units of electricity.

Subsidy support can range from ₹30,000 to ₹60,000.

2 to 3 kW or higher solar system: Suitable for households using around 150 to 300 units of electricity.

Subsidy support can range from ₹60,000 to ₹78,000.

Save Electricity Bills for Nearly 25 Years

One of the biggest benefits of rooftop solar panels is long-term savings.

Solar panels installed under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana generally have a lifespan of around 25 years.

This means households can reduce their electricity expenses for decades after installation.

With free electricity benefits and lower dependence on the power grid, the scheme can provide major financial relief to families in the long run.
