Higher EPFO Pension Rules continue to determine how eligible employees and pensioners can receive enhanced monthly pension under the Employees’ Pension Scheme.
The higher-pension option followed the Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling, but the application window for eligible members closed in July 2023.
Higher EPFO Pension Rules Explained
Under the EPS framework, the standard pension calculation is linked to pensionable wages and pensionable service.
The pension is calculated using the formula: pensionable wages multiplied by pensionable service, divided by 70.
The standard wage ceiling under the scheme is ₹15,000 per month, while the usual employer contribution towards EPS is 8.33%.
For members who had opted for higher pension, enhanced contributions can go up to 9.49%, subject to the applicable rules.
Who Was Eligible For Higher EPFO Pension?
The Supreme Court’s November 2022 judgment allowed eligible employees who were members before September 1, 2014, and continued in service thereafter to exercise the higher-pension option through a joint declaration with their employer.
The facility was also available to certain eligible pensioners under the conditions laid down by the court and EPFO.
The option was not an automatic pension increase for every EPFO member.
Those who chose higher pension had to meet the prescribed eligibility conditions and complete the required validation process.
The application window eventually closed in July 2023, with EPFO receiving around 17.49 lakh applications for validation of joint options.
How Does Higher Pension Affect EPF Savings?
Choosing a higher pension can increase the monthly pension after retirement, but it also affects the amount available as a lump-sum EPF corpus.
A larger portion of the eligible retirement savings is directed towards the pension fund, which can reduce the amount available for withdrawal while increasing the pension benefit.
This means members need to consider both sides of the decision: a higher regular pension after retirement versus a potentially smaller lump-sum EPF balance.
The final pension depends on factors such as pensionable wages and the length of pensionable service.
What Is The Latest EPFO Higher Pension Status?
The government has said EPFO is processing higher-pension cases in line with the Supreme Court’s directions and applicable provisions.
For eligible employees and pensioners who opted for higher pension, verification and other formalities are required before the enhanced pension can be determined and released.
The current EPS framework continues to retain the ₹15,000 wage ceiling, while the minimum monthly pension remains ₹1,000.
There is currently no implemented increase in these limits under the rules discussed in the latest update.
For EPFO members, the key point is that the higher-pension option is not a newly opened application window.
It relates to eligible members who exercised the option during the earlier process and whose claims are being handled under the applicable rules.
