Cooperative Banks to Stay Open During Sept 28-30 Strike, with banking services expected to continue as usual despite the three-day nationwide strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions from September 28 to 30, 2026.
The clarification is important for customers who may be concerned about branch closures and disruption to deposits, withdrawals, remittances and other banking work during the strike period.
Cooperative Banks to Stay Open During Sept 28-30 Strike
Leading cooperative banking bodies have said cooperative banks are not participating in the proposed strike and will continue their normal operations during the three-day period.
The National Federation of Urban Cooperative Banks and Credit Societies, National Urban Cooperative Finance and Development Corporation and National Federation of State Cooperative Banks issued the clarification ahead of the strike.
Which Cooperative Bank Services Will Continue?
Customers of cooperative banks are expected to continue accessing branch-based services, including deposits, withdrawals, remittances and other transactions, depending on the facilities and operating arrangements of their individual banks.
Eligible farmers and members can also continue approaching cooperative banks for agricultural and other credit-related requirements. Urban cooperative banks will continue serving individuals, traders and small businesses.
Digital banking channels such as ATMs, internet banking, mobile banking and UPI are also expected to remain available wherever offered by individual cooperative banks.
How Many Cooperative Banks Are Covered?
India’s cooperative banking network includes around 1,450 Urban Cooperative Banks, 34 State Cooperative Banks and 351 District Central Cooperative Banks.
These institutions serve customers across rural, semi-urban and urban areas, including farmers, rural households, small businesses, traders and entrepreneurs.
Customers Should Check Individual Bank Arrangements
Although cooperative banks are expected to operate normally during the strike, customers have been advised to confirm specific services with their respective bank or branch.
This is particularly relevant for transactions that require branch-level processing, as the availability of individual facilities can depend on each bank’s operating arrangements.
The clarification comes as public sector banks and Regional Rural Banks face the proposed September 28-30 strike.
The government has separately taken steps to provide customers with an additional banking day before the strike by keeping public sector banks and Regional Rural Banks operational on Sunday, September 27.
