Orange and yellow alerts have been issued for multiple districts, while some areas have already announced school holidays due to persistent rainfall.

The continuing wet spell could affect road travel, daily routines and school attendance.

Residents are advised to follow local weather updates and district administration announcements, particularly in areas facing heavy downpours and waterlogging.

Tamil Nadu Rain Alert: Orange and Yellow Warnings Issued

The IMD has issued orange alerts for several districts, including Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Coimbatore and the Nilgiris. Other districts covered by the warning include Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai, along with Karaikal.

Yellow alerts have also been issued for areas including Tiruchirappalli, Erode, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Cuddalore, Namakkal, Villuppuram, Tiruppur and Karur, as well as Puducherry.

The forecast warns of heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph may also occur in some locations.

Schools Closed in Five Districts on October 22

Heavy rainfall has prompted school holiday announcements in five Tamil Nadu districts for Thursday, October 22. These are Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanniyakumari, Tenkasi and Tirupattur.

The closures follow continued rain across parts of the state.

Parents should check announcements from their respective schools and district administrations before sending children to school, as holiday orders can vary by location and institution.

No statewide school closure should be assumed from these district-level announcements. Residents in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu should also check local official updates rather than rely on reports of closures elsewhere.

Tamil Nadu Weather Forecast From October 23 to 27

Rain is expected to continue across several parts of Tamil Nadu over the coming days, although the intensity and areas affected may change.

On October 23, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast at isolated places in Kanniyakumari, the Nilgiris and Coimbatore. Other districts may also experience heavy rain and thunderstorms.

For October 24, the forecast highlights Kanniyakumari, Coimbatore, the Nilgiris and the ghat areas of Tirunelveli for heavy rainfall.

Several other districts, including Tiruppur, Erode, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Pudukkottai and parts of the Cauvery delta, may also receive heavy showers.

On October 25, the Nilgiris, Coimbatore and Theni are among the areas where heavy to very heavy rain is possible. Rainfall may also affect Chennai and several northern, central and southern districts.

For October 26, the IMD expects heavy rain at isolated places across a number of districts, including Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, Erode, Theni, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari and parts of the delta region.

By October 27, the forecast indicates a reduction in intensity, with moderate rain possible at isolated locations in several districts.

These forecasts may change as weather conditions develop. Residents should check the latest district-wise warnings before making travel plans.

Safety Precautions During Heavy Rainfall

Heavy rain can lead to waterlogging, reduced visibility and travel delays. People should avoid walking or driving through flooded roads and stay away from overflowing rivers, streams and other water bodies.

Thunderstorms and lightning also require caution. Residents should seek shelter indoors during lightning activity and avoid exposed areas.

Those living in locations prone to flooding should follow instructions issued by local authorities.

Parents should confirm school operating arrangements directly with school authorities, while commuters should allow extra time for journeys and check road conditions before setting out.

With rainfall expected to continue across several districts through October 26, residents should remain alert and follow official IMD forecasts and local administration advisories.

The situation may differ from one district to another, so the latest local information remains essential.
