Australia visa rules for Indians have changed from October 26, 2026, with certain new visa applicants now required to provide biometric information, including fingerprints and a facial image.
The expanded requirement is intended to strengthen identity verification and reduce the risk of visa fraud.
The change applies to applications lodged on or after October 26, 2026. Applications submitted before this date and visas already granted are not affected by the new requirement.
Australia Visa Rules for Indians: What Has Changed?
Under the expanded biometric programme, eligible Indian applicants may be asked to provide fingerprints and a facial image as part of their Australian visa application process.
The requirement does not automatically apply to every applicant; Australia’s Department of Home Affairs will inform individuals who need to complete the additional step.
Applicants will generally receive instructions by email, either directly or through their authorised migration agent. The notification will explain how and where to complete the biometric process.
Australia already collects biometric information from visa applicants in nearly 60 countries.
Extending the programme to India brings the country’s application process in line with this broader identity-verification system.
Where Can Indians Submit Australian Visa Biometrics?
Depending on their circumstances, applicants may be directed to one of 16 Australian Biometrics Collection Centres across India operated by VFS Global.
They will need to follow the instructions in their official notification to arrange the required appointment.
Some eligible applicants may also be able to complete the identity check digitally through the Australian Immi App.
However, the app is not an option for everyone, and applicants must meet the eligibility requirements stated by the Department of Home Affairs.
Those instructed to use the app should follow the official process for submitting their passport details and facial image.
Applicants who are required to visit a collection centre should not assume that the digital option can replace an in-person appointment.
Will the New Australia Visa Rules Delay Applications?
The Australian government has said the expanded biometric requirements are not expected to adversely affect visa processing times, provided applicants complete the required steps promptly after receiving notification.
Applicants should therefore monitor their registered email address and respond to any request for biometric information without unnecessary delay.
They should also check their application account for updates or additional instructions.
Providing biometrics does not guarantee visa approval. Applicants must still meet the relevant visa eligibility criteria and satisfy all other requirements associated with their application.
What Should Indian Visa Applicants Do Now?
People planning to visit Australia for tourism, education, work or other purposes should check the latest instructions issued by the Department of Home Affairs when applying for a visa.
Those who receive a biometric requirement letter should read it carefully before arranging an appointment or using the app.
Applicants are advised to wait for the official notification before booking a biometric appointment or attempting to submit information through the Australian Immi App.
They should use official government instructions and authorised service channels throughout the process.
The new requirement is intended to make identity checks more reliable and protect genuine applicants against identity misuse.
Personal information submitted through the biometric process is handled under applicable laws and security safeguards, including encrypted transmission.
For Indian travellers, the key step is to check whether biometrics have been requested for their individual application and complete the process according to the instructions provided.
