Australia Visa Biometrics requirements have expanded to include visa applicants in India from October 26, 2026.

Under the new rules, people applying for an Australian visa may need to submit fingerprints and a facial image as part of the application process.

The change brings India into Australia’s expanded biometric collection programme, which covers nearly 60 countries.

The Australian High Commission in New Delhi said applicants will be informed by the Department of Home Affairs if they need to provide their biometric information.

Who Needs to Submit Fingerprints and Facial Images?

Not every Indian applicant will automatically have to submit biometrics.

The Department of Home Affairs will notify applicants who are required to complete this step and provide instructions on how to do so.

The requirement may apply to different visa applicants depending on their individual circumstances.

The authorities have not provided a definitive list of visa categories affected by the expansion, so applicants should wait for official instructions rather than assume that their visa type is exempt.

Biometrics generally include fingerprints and a digital image of the face.

These details help immigration authorities verify an applicant’s identity and support checks intended to protect against identity misuse and immigration-related fraud.

Do the New Rules Apply to Existing Visa Applications?

The new requirement applies only to Australian visa applications lodged on or after October 26, 2026. Applications submitted before that date are not affected by this expansion.

Applicants planning to apply after the effective date should monitor communications from the Department of Home Affairs.

Those who receive a biometric requirement notice should follow the instructions carefully and complete the process within the specified timeframe.

The new policy does not mean that every application will require a separate biometric appointment.

The process will depend on the instructions issued to each applicant and the options available in their circumstances.

How Can Applicants Submit Their Biometrics?

There are two possible ways to complete the biometric requirement. Some applicants may be asked to visit an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre (ABCC) in person, while eligible applicants may be able to submit their information digitally through the Australian Immi App.

Applicants who have previously provided their biometrics at an ABCC and hold a valid passport may qualify to use the app at no cost.

However, this option is not available to everyone, and applicants should confirm their eligibility before attempting to complete the process digitally.

Those instructed to attend a collection centre should follow the appointment guidance provided by the authorities.

They should also use official Australian immigration channels to check the requirements and avoid relying on unofficial messages or third-party claims.

Will the New Biometric Rules Delay Visa Processing?

Australian authorities do not expect the expanded biometric collection requirement to affect visa processing times, provided applicants complete the required steps promptly.

However, applicants who delay submitting their fingerprints or facial image after receiving an official request could experience delays in their individual cases.

Completing the requirement as instructed is therefore important for people planning travel, education, employment or visits to Australia.

The authorities have also stated that biometric information will be collected, stored and managed under Australian legislation and applicable local laws, with privacy and data protection safeguards in place.

Applicants should remember that submitting biometrics does not guarantee visa approval.

It is one part of the immigration process, and the final decision remains subject to the applicable visa requirements.

Overall, the updated Australia Visa Biometrics process means Indian applicants should pay closer attention to official communications after submitting a new application.

Checking the notification, understanding the available submission method and completing the requirement promptly can help applicants avoid unnecessary complications.
