On February 1, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made important announcements benefiting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
One key announcement was the introduction of credit cards specifically for MSMEs. This move aims to provide easier access to loans for small businesses and is expected to significantly benefit them.
The credit cards will follow the model of the Kisan Credit Card, which has proven helpful for farmers.

10 Lakh Credit Cards in the First Year
According to the Finance Minister’s Union Budget speech, the government plans to issue 10 lakh MSME credit cards in the first year. Each card will have a credit limit of Rs 5 lakh.
This initiative is seen as a major step towards addressing liquidity issues for small businesses.
Jyoti Prakash Gadiya, Managing Director of Resurgent India, referred to this as a game changer for micro enterprises registered on the Udyam portal.
Easier Access to Loans for Small Businesses
One of the biggest challenges small enterprises face is securing funds for their businesses. With the introduction of MSME credit cards, businesses will find it easier to overcome obstacles related to working capital.
This move is seen as a significant step toward improving financial inclusion for small businesses across the country.
The Importance of MSMEs in India
India has over 1 crore registered MSMEs, providing jobs to approximately 7.5 crore people. They contribute 36% to manufacturing and 45% to exports.
Given the importance of MSMEs in the economy, the government plans to gradually extend the availability of MSME credit cards to even more businesses.
Low-Interest Loans for MSMEs
Another key benefit of MSME credit cards is that they will allow small enterprises to access loans at much lower interest rates. Currently, MSMEs often face interest rates of 18-20%.
With the new credit cards, loans will be available at a reduced rate of 8-10%. This reduction in borrowing costs will make their products more competitive by lowering production costs.
The Udyam portal will provide customized credit cards tailored to the needs of small enterprises.
