The use of UPI (Unified Payments Interface) transactions has become very common. Payments can be completed within seconds using this system.

If you use UPI services, there is an important update for you. Starting April 1, 2025, new rules set by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) will take effect.

Banks Will Remove Unused Mobile Numbers

NPCI has instructed banks to delete mobile numbers that are no longer in use or have been reassigned to someone else. This step aims to make UPI transactions more secure

and prevent incorrect payments. From April 1, 2025, these inactive or reassigned numbers will be removed from the UPI system.

System Updates Will Be Necessary

To reduce transaction errors, NPCI has asked banks and UPI payment service providers to regularly update their systems. This decision was made during an NPCI meeting on July 16, 2024,

and will be implemented from April 1, 2025. Banks and UPI providers will prepare an updated list of mobile numbers every week to prevent unsuccessful or incorrect transactions.

Users Must Give Consent

Mobile numbers will only be updated if users provide their consent through the UPI app. If a user does not give permission, their number will not be updated, and they will not be able to make UPI transactions with that number.

Banks and UPI Apps Must Report to NPCI

From April 1, 2025, banks and UPI apps must submit a monthly report to NPCI. This report will include details about:

1) The number of UPI IDs linked to mobile numbers

2) The number of active users

3) The number of UPI-based transactions

UPI Transactions Will Be More Secure

These updates are being introduced to enhance the security of UPI transactions. To continue using UPI services smoothly, users should ensure they update their UPI apps regularly.
