If you have recently repaid a loan or cleared your credit card dues, there is good news.

You no longer need to wait for months to see an improvement in your credit score.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced new rules that will make credit score updates much faster from 2026.

This change will especially help first-time home buyers, loan applicants, and people trying to rebuild their credit score.

Faster Credit Score Updates Explained

Earlier, banks and NBFCs used to update credit data once in 30 to 45 days.

This meant that even after repaying a loan or clearing dues, the improvement in your credit score took time to show.

From January 2025, RBI directed banks and NBFCs to report credit data to bureaus at least twice a month.

As a result, the impact of loan prepayment or account closure now reflects in your credit report within about two weeks.

Weekly Credit Score Updates From 2026

RBI has gone a step further by proposing weekly credit score updates starting in 2026.

Under this system, credit data will be refreshed every 7 days — on the 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th, and the last day of the month.

This means actions like closing a credit card, paying EMIs on time, or correcting errors in your credit report can show results within days instead of weeks.

How Credit Scores Actually Change

Many people believe credit scores are updated only once a month, but that’s not true.

Your credit score is calculated whenever new data is reported or when a lender checks your report.

Late payments, timely EMIs, new loans, or account closures can affect your score immediately based on the latest available information.

Why This Change Matters

Faster updates mean quicker credit recovery and better loan opportunities.

If you are planning to apply for a home loan, personal loan, or credit card, these changes can help you qualify sooner and on better terms.

With weekly updates coming in 2026, managing your credit responsibly will now show results faster than ever before.
