Aadhaar Face Authentication is set to make digital onboarding easier as UIDAI has introduced new tools that allow banks, fintech companies, insurers and other institutions to integrate face-based Aadhaar verification directly into their own mobile applications. 

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) launched the Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK and Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox at Global Fintech Fest 2026.

The move is aimed at making identity verification simpler for customers while helping financial institutions build the facility into their existing digital platforms.

Aadhaar Face Authentication Comes Directly to Apps

Under the new system, eligible institutions can integrate Aadhaar face authentication into their native Android and iOS applications.

This can reduce the need for users to move between different applications while completing digital onboarding or identity verification.

Earlier, users could be required to use a separate application for Aadhaar face authentication during certain processes.

The new SDK is designed to allow participating institutions to bring the authentication experience more directly into their own apps.

UIDAI describes face authentication as a consent-based, contactless method in which the person’s captured face is matched with the facial image associated with their Aadhaar record.

It is an additional authentication method alongside options such as fingerprint, iris and OTP authentication.

New UIDAI Tool Uses Liveness and Anti-Spoofing Checks

The Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK includes artificial intelligence and machine learning-based liveness and anti-spoofing capabilities.

These features are designed to help determine whether the authentication attempt is being made by a real person rather than through a spoofing attempt.

The system also includes secure handling and encryption of authentication-related data.

UIDAI has designed the facility to work with consumer smartphones, allowing institutions to build face authentication into digital customer journeys.

For customers, the practical benefit could be a smoother verification process when a bank, fintech platform, insurer or another participating service provider adopts the technology.

However, the new facility does not mean that every banking or financial app will immediately offer Aadhaar face verification.

Individual institutions need to integrate the technology into their own applications before customers can use it.

Sandbox Helps Banks and Fintechs Test the System

Along with the SDK, UIDAI has introduced an Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox for developers and testing teams.

The platform is intended to help institutions test different stages of the authentication process before deploying the feature for customers.

The Sandbox allows developers and quality assurance teams to test user provisioning and consent, face capture, liveness checks, authentication and response validation.

They can also examine how the system handles different failure situations.

These include network interruptions, timeouts, invalid digital signatures and suspected spoofing attempts.

Testing such scenarios can help institutions identify problems before integrating the service into their customer-facing applications.

UIDAI already provides a developer sandbox environment for organisations working on Aadhaar-enabled applications and authentication services.

What This Means for Customers

The new development could make digital onboarding more convenient for customers who need to complete identity verification through participating financial and other service providers.

Aadhaar face authentication is a contactless verification method and can also provide an alternative where fingerprint-based authentication is difficult.

UIDAI says face authentication can be performed using a compatible smartphone or tablet and is available as an additional authentication mode for Aadhaar holders.

The wider objective is to make digital identity verification easier while allowing institutions to integrate Aadhaar authentication into their existing digital journeys.

The actual availability and process, however, will depend on when individual banks, fintech companies, insurers and other eligible entities adopt the new tools.
