Are Banks Open on January 1, 2026?
On January 1, banks will remain closed in some cities due to New Year celebrations and the Gaan-Ngai festival. Banks will be shut in Aizawl, Chennai, Gangtok, Imphal, Itanagar, Kohima, Kolkata, and Shillong. However, banking services will continue as usual in other cities across the country.
Complete List of Bank Holidays in January 2026
Banks will be closed on January 2 in Aizawl, Kochi, and Thiruvananthapuram because of New Year celebrations and Mannam Jayanti. On January 3, banks in Lucknow will remain closed due to Hazrat Ali Jayanti.
In the second week of January, banks in Kolkata will be closed on January 12 for Swami Vivekananda Jayanti.
On January 14, banking services will be suspended in Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, and Itanagar on account of Makar Sankranti and Magh Bihu.
On January 15, banks will remain closed in Bengaluru, Chennai, Gangtok, Hyderabad, and Vijayawada due to Uttarayana Punyakaal, Pongal, and Makar Sankranti.
In Chennai, banks will also be closed on January 16 for Thiruvalluvar Day and on January 17 for Uzhavar Thirunal.
Later in the month, banks in Agartala, Bhubaneswar, and Kolkata will be closed on January 23 for Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary, Saraswati Puja,
