With cyber fraud and suspicious online transactions increasing in India, banks and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have made UPI rules stricter.
Many users are now seeing lower UPI limits or temporary payment blocks if the system notices unusual activity in their accounts.
Banks say these actions are part of automatic fraud detection systems designed to protect customer money and prevent online scams.

Why Your UPI Limit May Suddenly Reduce
Banks continuously monitor account activity through automated security systems. If something unusual is detected, your UPI services may get restricted immediately.
Here are some situations where banks may take action:
Sudden High-Value Transactions
If you usually make small payments between ₹100 and ₹500, but suddenly try to transfer ₹50,000, the bank’s risk system may treat it as suspicious activity and temporarily reduce your UPI limit.
Transactions From Different Locations
If payments are attempted from two different cities or distant locations on the same day, the system may flag the account for security reasons.
Repeated Failed Attempts
Entering the wrong UPI PIN multiple times or repeated failed transactions can also trigger restrictions.
However, banks say there is no need to panic. In many cases, these restrictions are temporary and are automatically removed within 24 hours. Users can also contact their bank to reset the limit faster.
RBI Introduces Stronger Security Rules
To reduce digital fraud, the Reserve Bank of India has introduced stricter verification rules for online and UPI payments.
Under the new system, entering an OTP alone may not be enough for certain transactions. Users may also need biometric verification such as:
Fingerprint scan
Face recognition
Password or UPI PIN verification
These extra layers of security are being added to make online payments safer.
Current UPI Transaction Limits
The National Payments Corporation of India has also fixed transaction limits for safer digital payments.
Standard UPI limit: ₹1 lakh per day
Maximum daily transactions: 20
Some verified users may get higher limits up to ₹5 lakh
UPI Lite limit: ₹1,000 per transaction
UPI Lite daily limit: ₹10,00
