Belated ITR Filing Deadline for Assessment Year 2026–27 is December 31, 2026, giving taxpayers who missed their applicable original income tax return deadline another opportunity to file their returns.

However, filing late can attract a fee and interest on unpaid tax, while certain tax benefits may also be affected.

The deadline applies to income earned during the financial year 2025–26, which is reported in Assessment Year 2026–27.

Taxpayers who have not yet filed their returns should check their eligibility, calculate any outstanding tax and complete the process before the applicable cut-off.

A belated return is different from a revised return. A belated return is filed after the original deadline, while a revised return is used to correct an income tax return that has already been submitted.

Belated ITR Filing Deadline and Late Fees

For Assessment Year 2026–27, taxpayers can generally file a belated return by December 31, 2026, or before completion of their assessment, whichever occurs earlier.

The applicable deadline may differ depending on the taxpayer’s category and original filing requirements.

Under Section 234F of the Income-tax Act, 1961, the late filing fee is ₹1,000 for taxpayers whose total income does not exceed ₹5 lakh. For taxpayers with total income above ₹5 lakh, the fee is ₹5,000.

Interest may also be payable on outstanding tax under the applicable provisions.

Taxpayers should calculate their total liability before submitting a belated return, as the filing fee and interest are separate charges.

How to File a Belated Income Tax Return

Taxpayers can file their returns online through the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal.

Before starting, they should collect their PAN details, bank information, Form 16 where applicable, Annual Information Statement (AIS), Form 26AS and records of income and deductions.

The process involves selecting Assessment Year 2026–27, choosing the appropriate ITR form, entering income and tax details, paying any outstanding tax and submitting the return.

The return must then be verified using an available verification method within the prescribed period.

Taxpayers should carefully check the information before submitting the form. Errors in income reporting, tax credits or bank details can delay processing or create the need for corrections.

Revised ITR Deadline Is March 31, 2027

Taxpayers who have already filed their returns but later discover mistakes can generally submit a revised return by March 31, 2027, or before completion of assessment, whichever occurs earlier.

For Assessment Year 2026–27, the revised return remains governed by the Income-tax Act, 1961, even though the new Income-tax Act, 2025, came into force on April 1, 2026.

A revised return can be used to correct errors or omissions in a previously filed return.

The deadline and any applicable fee should be checked carefully, particularly for revisions made after December 31, 2026.

Missing the belated return deadline does not automatically mean that every filing option disappears. An updated return may be available in certain circumstances, subject to separate time limits, additional tax requirements and restrictions.

Taxpayers should consult the official rules or a qualified tax professional to determine which option applies to their situation.
