There is important news for Indians planning to work in New Zealand. The New Zealand government has announced a new English language rule for many foreign workers under the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).
Starting next month, workers applying for “Skill Level 3” jobs will also need to meet a minimum English requirement. Earlier, this rule mainly applied to lower-skilled jobs under Levels 4 and 5.
The new rule means applicants must show basic English communication skills before getting a work visa.

Basic English Now Mandatory for More Jobs
According to Immigration Minister Erica Stanford, workers in Skill Level 3 jobs form the largest group under the AEWV system.
She said basic English helps workers:
Understand their rights
Communicate in daily life
Adjust better to workplaces and local communities
Under the new rule, applicants will need an IELTS score of 4.0 or an equivalent English test result. This level is considered basic conversational English and does not require advanced fluency.
However, the rule will not apply to seasonal visa workers.
Why Has New Zealand Introduced This Rule?
The government says many skilled trade jobs in New Zealand are currently being filled by workers with very limited English knowledge.
Due to labor shortages, companies have continued hiring workers even when communication skills were weak. But officials believe this creates problems later, especially when workers try to settle into society and communicate at work.
The new English requirement is aimed at improving workplace integration and helping migrants who may later apply for permanent residence in New Zealand.
What is Skill Level 3?
Skill Level 3 is part of the ANZSCO and National Occupation List system used by the New Zealand government.
ANZSCO is the official classification system that defines:
Skills needed for a job
Required qualifications
Work experience standards
Skill Level 3 generally includes jobs that require:
A Certificate IV or Diploma
Or at least two years of relevant work experience
These jobs are considered skilled positions.
Which Jobs Come Under Skill Level 3?
Several popular jobs fall under this category, including:
Trades and Technical Jobs
Electrician
Carpenter
Plumber
Motor mechanic
Healthcare Support Roles
Nursing assistant
Dental assistant
Ambulance attendant
IT and Service Sector Jobs
IT support technician
Software and hardware support staff
Chef
Baker
Hairdresser
Supervisory and administrative roles
What Does This Mean for Indian Workers?
This new rule will directly affect Indian workers planning to move to New Zealand for Skill Level 3 jobs.
Now, applicants must also prove their English ability during the visa process. While an IELTS band score of 4.0 is considered relatively easy to achieve, it still adds another step for workers applying for jobs abroad.
For many Indians looking for skilled work opportunities in New Zealand, preparing for a basic English test will now become an important part of the application process.
