After filing your Income Tax Return (ITR), most taxpayers have one common question—when will the refund arrive and how can they check its status?
The good news is that you don’t need to visit the Income Tax office to find out.
The Income Tax Department offers online services that let you track your refund status in just a few minutes.

What Is an ITR Refund?
An ITR refund is the amount returned by the government when you have paid more tax than required during a financial year.
This can happen if you have paid extra tax through TDS (Tax Deducted at Source), advance tax, or other tax payments.
However, you will receive the refund only after filing and successfully verifying your Income Tax Return.
How to Check ITR Refund Status on the Income Tax Portal
You can easily check your refund status through the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal by following these steps:
Log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal.
Go to the e-File section.
Click on Income Tax Returns.
Select View Filed Returns.
Your return status and refund details will appear on the screen.
You Can Also Check Through the NSDL (Protean) Portal
If you don’t want to log in to the Income Tax portal, you can also check your refund status through the NSDL (Protean) portal.
Simply:
Visit the portal.
Enter your PAN number and Assessment Year.
Fill in the captcha code.
Click on Proceed to view your refund status.
When Will You Get Your Refund?
In most cases, the Income Tax Department processes refunds within a few weeks after your ITR is verified.
However, the refund may take longer if there are issues such as incorrect bank account details, pending ITR verification, or mismatched information in your tax records.
Things to Remember
To avoid delays in receiving your refund, keep these important points in mind:
Complete ITR verification after filing your return.
Make sure your bank account number and IFSC code are correct.
Ensure the details in your return match your AIS and Form 26AS.
Don’t Miss the ITR Filing Deadline
The last date to file your Income Tax Return for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) is July 31, 2026.
Filing your return before the deadline not only helps you avoid penalties but also increases the chances of receiving your tax refund faster.
