The United Forum of IDBI Officers and Employees (UFIOE) has announced the protest and issued a formal notice to the bank’s management.

Customers who plan to visit IDBI Bank branches during these dates should monitor official bank announcements and complete urgent banking work in advance where possible.

The extent of any disruption will depend on employee participation and the services affected at individual branches.

Why Are IDBI Bank Employees Planning a Strike?

The employees’ organisations are protesting the proposed transfer of ownership and management control of IDBI Bank to a subsidiary of Canada-based Fairfax Financial Holdings.

The unions have asked the government to reconsider the transaction and retain majority ownership of the lender.

The forum has demanded that the government acquire at least an additional 6% stake in IDBI Bank, either from Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) or through market purchases, to maintain government shareholding of at least 51%.

It has referred to assurances made in Parliament in December 2003 regarding majority government ownership.

What Are the Employees’ Main Demands?

Apart from opposing the proposed sale, the unions want written and legally binding assurances that employees’ existing service conditions, welfare measures, pension benefits and reservation policies will be protected.

They have also sought the continuation of industry-level wage revisions and pension benefits after the ownership change.

If the sale proceeds, the forum wants employees and officers to have the option of moving to public sector banks without losing their service records, pay scales, seniority, salaries or retirement benefits.

Another demand concerns outsourced and contractual workers employed by IDBI Bank. The unions have called for their absorption into the institution.

These are demands raised by the employees’ representatives and should not be treated as confirmed changes to employment conditions.

Will Banking Services Be Affected on November 2 and 3?

The planned protest is intended to cover IDBI Bank branches and offices nationwide. As a result, customers may face delays in branch-based services if employees participate in the strike.

However, the precise level of disruption has not been confirmed for every branch.

Customers should check with their local branch before visiting and consider completing time-sensitive work before November 2.

Those who need to deposit documents, update account details or seek in-person assistance may wish to plan ahead.

Digital banking services, ATMs and other self-service facilities may provide alternatives for routine transactions, but customers should verify service availability through official channels rather than assume every facility will operate without interruption.

What Should IDBI Bank Customers Do?

Customers can prepare by checking account balances, ensuring they have access to mobile or internet banking, and completing urgent branch-dependent tasks ahead of the announced dates.

Those expecting payments or needing cash should plan according to their normal requirements and check the availability of nearby ATMs.

The proposed strike is connected to the ownership dispute rather than an announced change to customers’ deposit terms or account agreements.

Customers should continue to follow official communications from IDBI Bank for any service advisories.

The unions have said they remain open to discussions with the government and bank management but have warned that the agitation could be intensified if their demands remain unresolved.

Any extension beyond November 2 and 3 would require further developments, so customers should watch for fresh announcements as the dates approach.
