Meta has updated its content moderation system after a controversy involving the temporary removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook video.

The company admitted the incident was a mistake and has introduced new checks for VIP accounts to help prevent similar errors in the future.

The move comes after the Indian government raised concerns and asked Meta to explain what happened.

PM Modi’s Video Triggered the Change

Recently, a Facebook video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in which he spoke about taking strict action against paper leaks, was temporarily removed or had its reach restricted.

The incident sparked criticism, following which the central government sought an explanation from Meta.

IT Secretary S. Krishnan said Meta expressed regret over the mistake, and senior company officials assured the government that they would provide a detailed explanation.

Extra Review for VIP Accounts

Meta has now introduced an additional review process for content posted by high-profile or VIP accounts.

Under the new system, if action needs to be taken against posts from top political leaders, government accounts, or other important public figures, the content will go through an extra level of review before any decision is made.

The company also plans to involve senior moderation teams in such cases to reduce the chances of accidental removals or unnecessary reach restrictions caused by technical issues or human error.

However, Meta has not confirmed whether these new rules will apply only in India or be introduced globally for all VIP accounts.

Debate Over Social Media Moderation

The incident has once again raised questions about how social media platforms moderate content.

In recent years, Meta, X, and other platforms have faced criticism because automated moderation systems have sometimes removed genuine content after wrongly identifying it as a policy violation.

Experts believe the extra review process for high-profile accounts could reduce such mistakes. At the same time, they say platforms must remain transparent and apply their rules fairly to all users.

It will be important to see whether Meta’s new moderation process succeeds in making content decisions more reliable.
