PhonePe UAE payment licenses have moved the company closer to starting locally licensed payment services in the United Arab Emirates.
The digital payments company has received in-principle approval for two payment licenses from the UAE’s central bank.
The approvals mark an important step in PhonePe’s plans to expand its business beyond India. However, the company still needs to complete further regulatory requirements before beginning operations in the UAE.
PhonePe UAE Payment Licenses Cover Two Services
The two licenses include Retail Payment Services and Card Schemes, along with Stored Value Facilities. These approvals could allow PhonePe to offer retail payment services, card-related services and stored-value payment products in the UAE.
Stored Value Facilities can support digital payment products such as wallets. The Retail Payment Services and Card Schemes approval could also help PhonePe work with merchant payments and other domestic payment services.
The company’s next step will be to obtain final regulatory approval. Only after completing the required process will PhonePe be able to establish a fully locally licensed payment business in the UAE.
PhonePe Plans Local Payment Expansion
Once the final approval is secured, PhonePe could explore partnerships with local banks, licensed payment service providers and technology companies. This would help the company build its presence within the UAE’s domestic digital payments ecosystem.
PhonePe is also exploring possible collaboration opportunities with Aani and Jaywan, two important parts of the UAE’s local payment infrastructure.
Aani is the UAE’s domestic instant payment platform, while Jaywan is connected with the country’s national card payment network. Potential integration with these systems could support PhonePe’s plans to develop payment services for users and businesses in the UAE.
What the UAE Move Means for Indian Users
PhonePe already has a presence in the UAE connected with UPI payments for Indian travellers. The new approvals represent a broader step, as the company is now moving towards establishing a locally licensed business in the country.
The expansion could eventually make it easier for PhonePe to offer payment services to local customers and businesses, subject to final regulatory approval and the company’s operational rollout.
For Indian travellers, UPI availability in the UAE has already made digital payments more convenient at participating merchants. The planned local expansion could take PhonePe’s presence beyond services primarily linked to Indian visitors.
UAE Set to Become PhonePe’s First Overseas Market
The UAE is significant for PhonePe because it is the first overseas market where the company is moving towards establishing a locally licensed payment business.
PhonePe was launched in 2016 and has built its core business around digital payments, bill payments, recharges and related financial services in India.
The latest approvals do not mean that full local operations have started yet. PhonePe must complete the remaining regulatory process before launching its locally licensed services in the UAE.
