Millions of people in India work in the unorganized sector, including street vendors, drivers, laborers, domestic workers, and agricultural workers.

Most of these workers do not receive benefits such as Provident Fund (PF), gratuity, or pension. As a result, many face financial difficulties after retirement.

To provide financial security to such workers, the Central Government launched the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan (PM-SYM) Yojana.

Under this scheme, eligible workers receive a guaranteed monthly pension of ₹3,000 after reaching the age of 60.

Who Can Benefit From This Scheme?

The PM Shram Yogi Maandhan Yojana is meant for workers in the unorganized sector whose monthly income is ₹15,000 or less. People between the ages of 18 and 40 can apply for the scheme.

The scheme covers a wide range of workers, including street vendors, rickshaw pullers, construction workers, domestic workers, drivers, plumbers, tailors, agricultural laborers, cobblers, washermen, beedi workers, handloom workers, and other daily wage earners.

Government Also Contributes an Equal Amount

One of the biggest benefits of this scheme is that the Central Government contributes the same amount that the beneficiary deposits every month.

This makes it a co-contributory pension scheme and helps workers build a secure financial future with a small monthly investment.

Those who join the scheme at the age of 18 need to contribute only ₹55 per month. The contribution amount gradually increases with age, reaching ₹200 per month for those who join at the age of 40.

How Much Contribution Is Required?

A person joining the scheme at the age of 18 has to deposit ₹55 per month. Those joining at 20 years need to contribute ₹61 monthly, while people enrolling at 25 years have to pay ₹80 per month.

The contribution amount increases further with age. A person joining at 30 years has to contribute ₹105 every month, while someone joining at 35 years needs to pay ₹150.

Those enrolling at the maximum eligible age of 40 have to contribute ₹200 per month. In every case, the government contributes an equal amount.

You Will Receive ₹3,000 Monthly Pension After 60

Workers who continue making regular contributions under the scheme receive a guaranteed pension of ₹3,000 every month after turning 60.

The pension amount is transferred directly to the beneficiary’s bank account and provides financial support during old age.

This scheme can be especially beneficial for workers who do not have any pension or retirement savings plan.

What Happens If the Member Dies?

If a member dies before the pension starts, the spouse can continue the scheme by making regular contributions.

If the member dies after the pension has started, the spouse receives 50 percent of the pension amount as a family pension, helping provide financial support to the family.

Who Cannot Apply?

People who are already covered under statutory social security schemes such as EPFO, ESIC, or the National Pension System (NPS) cannot join this scheme. Income taxpayers are also not eligible to avail its benefits.

Rules for Leaving the Scheme

If a person exits the scheme within 10 years of joining, the deposited amount is returned along with savings bank interest.

If a member exits after completing 10 years but before reaching 60 years of age, the deposited amount and accumulated interest are returned.

If a person stops paying installments temporarily, the scheme can be reactivated by paying the pending contribution along with the applicable interest.

How to Apply for PM-SYM?

To enroll in the scheme, applicants need to visit their nearest Common Service Centre (CSC). They must carry their Aadhaar card, bank account or Jan Dhan account details, and mobile number.

After the required information is submitted, the system calculates the monthly contribution amount automatically.

Once the first installment is deposited, the registration process is completed, and the beneficiary receives a Shram Yogi Card.

Required Documents and Helpline Number

Applicants must have an Aadhaar card, a savings bank account or Jan Dhan account, and a mobile number to register for the scheme.
