Post Office SCSS Pension Calculator shows how senior citizens can earn an average monthly income of around ₹20,500 by investing the maximum permitted amount in the Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS).

Backed by the Government of India, the scheme offers guaranteed returns and is designed for retirees looking for a safe and regular source of income.

The Senior Citizens Savings Scheme is one of the most popular government-backed investment options for retirees because it combines capital safety with a competitive interest rate.

Under the current rules, an eligible investor can deposit up to ₹30 lakh in the SCSS.

The scheme currently offers an annual interest rate of 8.2%.

Interest is credited every quarter directly to the investor’s bank account. Although the payout is made once every three months, it works out to an average monthly income of about ₹20,500.

Here is the calculation for a ₹30 lakh investment:

Total investment: ₹30 lakh

Annual interest rate: 8.2%

Annual interest earned: ₹2,46,000

Quarterly interest payout: ₹61,500

Average monthly income: ₹20,500

Total interest over five years: ₹12,30,000

As per the scheme rules, quarterly interest is paid on April 1, July 1, October 1 and January 1. The monthly income figure is an average derived from these quarterly payments.

Who Can Invest in SCSS?

The Senior Citizens Savings Scheme is available to individuals aged 60 years and above.

People who have opted for voluntary retirement (VRS) can also invest in the scheme after the age of 55, subject to the applicable eligibility conditions.

The scheme has a maturity period of five years, and investors can extend it by another three years after maturity as per the prescribed rules.

Tax Benefits and Safety

Investments made under SCSS qualify for tax benefits under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, allowing eligible investors to claim deductions of up to ₹1.5 lakh in a financial year.

Since the scheme is backed by the Government of India, both the deposited amount and the applicable interest are considered secure. Investors who need funds urgently can close the account after one year by paying the applicable penalty under the scheme rules.

How to Open an SCSS Account

An SCSS account can be opened at any post office or an authorised public or private sector bank offering the scheme.

Applicants need identity proof, age proof and a passport-size photograph. If the investment amount exceeds ₹1 lakh, payment must be made through a cheque or demand draft.

For retirees seeking predictable income without market-related risk, the Senior Citizens Savings Scheme remains a government-backed option that combines safety with regular interest payouts.
