To help citizens stay protected, UIDAI has introduced a lock and unlock feature that lets you control how your Aadhaar is used.

This simple step can significantly reduce the risk of fraud and identity theft.

Why Aadhaar Has Become a Risk Target

Aadhaar is no longer just an identity proof. It is widely used to open bank accounts, access government schemes, and even buy SIM cards.

Because of this frequent use, Aadhaar numbers are shared at many places, increasing the chances of data misuse.

Cybercriminals take advantage of this exposure.

If Aadhaar details fall into the wrong hands, they can be misused for fake verification and financial fraud.

To solve this problem, UIDAI introduced the Aadhaar lock–unlock facility.

What Is the Aadhaar Lock–Unlock Feature?

Locking your Aadhaar means temporarily disabling your Aadhaar number.

Once locked, no Aadhaar-based service will work.

This includes biometric authentication and OTP verification.

In simple words, no one can use your Aadhaar without your permission.

Even when Aadhaar is locked, you can still use a Virtual ID (VID).

A VID is a temporary 16-digit number linked to your Aadhaar

It can be changed anytime and works as a safer alternative for verification.

Why You Should Lock Your Aadhaar

If you have shared your Aadhaar details at multiple places and worry about data leaks, locking your Aadhaar is a smart move.

Once locked:

Banks and companies cannot verify you using Aadhaar directly

Scammers cannot misuse your Aadhaar number

Your personal information stays protected

You can unlock it anytime when you actually need Aadhaar services.

How to Lock Aadhaar Through the UIDAI Website

UIDAI offers a quick and easy online process.

Step 1: Visit the official UIDAI website

Step 2: Go to the “My Aadhaar” section

Step 3: Click on “Aadhaar Lock/Unlock” and select “UID Lock”

Step 4: Enter your Aadhaar number, name, and PIN code

Step 5: Verify using OTP or TOTP from the mAadhaar app

After verification, your Aadhaar will be locked instantly, and you’ll receive a confirmation message.

How to Lock Aadhaar Using the mAadhaar App

You can also lock Aadhaar through your mobile phone.

Step 1: Download the mAadhaar app from the Play Store or App Store

Step 2: Log in using your registered mobile number

Step 3: Go to the Services section

Step 4: Select Aadhaar Lock/Unlock and tap “Lock Aadhaar”

Step 5: Complete verification using OTP

Your Aadhaar will be locked within seconds.

How to Unlock Aadhaar When Needed

If you need Aadhaar for any service, unlocking it is just as easy.

Generate a new 16-digit Virtual ID

Visit the UIDAI website and choose “Unlock”

Enter your VID and OTP

Your Aadhaar will be active again immediately.

Locking your Aadhaar is a simple but powerful step to protect your identity.

In a time when data security matters more than ever, this feature gives you full control over your most important document.
