There is some relief for employees and pensioners waiting for higher pensions under the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).

A large number of higher pension applications had been pending due to the sudden rise in claims and delays in verifying old contribution records.

To clear this backlog, the central government directed EPFO officials to speed up the process.

Following these instructions, EPFO has introduced four major measures to ensure that higher pension claims are processed faster and within the required time.

4 Steps EPFO Is Taking to Clear the Backlog

Online Portal for Higher Pension Applications

EPFO has introduced a dedicated online portal for eligible employees and pensioners to submit joint option applications for higher pensions.

The digital process reduces dependence on paperwork and brings applications into one system.

It also makes it easier to track the status of pension claims.

Faster and More Accurate Verification

EPFO has introduced standard procedures for checking previous contribution records.

Under the process, salary and contribution details submitted by employers are matched with EPFO records.

This helps verify whether the employee’s past salary details are correct before the higher pension is approved.

 Strict Instructions to Regional Offices

EPFO’s zonal and regional offices have been directed to process higher pension claims within the prescribed timeframe.

Regional officials have also been given more authority to resolve issues related to employers locally.

This is expected to reduce unnecessary delays in processing applications.

 Regular Review Through Video Conferences

EPFO’s senior officials are regularly holding video conferences with zonal and regional officers.

During these meetings, officials review the number of claims settled, identify delays and discuss problems faced by different offices.

Offices that are falling behind are given directions to speed up the process.

Why Were So Many Higher Pension Claims Delayed?

The issue gained attention after the Supreme Court’s November 2022 ruling, which allowed eligible employees to opt for a higher pension based on their actual salary instead of the statutory wage ceiling of ₹15,000.

Following the ruling, EPFO received a very large number of applications.

However, checking old contribution records was not always straightforward.

Errors in historical records, delays from employers and the complexity of verifying salary and contribution details caused many applications to remain pending.

What Does This Mean for Pensioners?

The new measures are aimed at reducing paperwork-related problems, fixing technical issues and making regional offices more accountable for timely processing.

For pensioners and employees who have been waiting for months, the changes could help move their applications forward faster.

Once eligible claims are approved, beneficiaries can receive their higher monthly pension and applicable pension arrears, subject to verification and the applicable rules.
