Bank branches will remain closed for 14 days during the month because of festivals and weekly holidays.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released the September 2026 bank holiday calendar. However, these holidays will not be the same across all states and cities.
Before visiting your bank, check whether your local branch is open.
Bank Strike on September 11
Apart from the scheduled holidays, the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has announced a nationwide bank strike on September 11, 2026.
The unions are demanding a five-day work week, better pension benefits, and changes to the performance-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.
The strike could affect normal banking services at many branches.
September 2026 Bank Holiday List
September 4 (Friday): Janmashtami (Vaishnav) and Krishna Jayanti – Banks closed in many cities.
September 6 (Sunday): Weekly holiday.
September 11 (Friday): Banks closed in Jaipur due to Municipal Corporation elections. A nationwide bank strike has also been announced.
September 12 (Saturday): Banks closed in Guwahati for Tirubhav Tithi of Srimanta Sankardev.
September 13 (Sunday): Weekly holiday.
September 14 (Monday): Ganesh Chaturthi – Banks closed in cities including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Belapur, Bhubaneswar, Nagpur, Panaji and Vijayawada.
September 15 (Tuesday): Banks closed in Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar and Goa for Samvatsari, Nuakhai and Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.
September 20 (Sunday): Weekly holiday.
September 21 (Monday): Banks closed in Bhubaneswar and Thiruvananthapuram due to Srimanta Sankardev Janmotsav and Sri Narayana Guru Samadhi.
September 22 (Tuesday): Banks closed in Ranchi for Karma Puja.
September 23 (Wednesday): Banks closed in Jammu and Srinagar for Maharaja Hari Singh Ji’s birthday.
September 25 (Friday): Banks closed in Gangtok for Indrajatra.
September 26 (Saturday): Fourth Saturday.
September 27 (Sunday): Weekly holiday.
More Bank Strikes Expected
Customers may face additional inconvenience later in the month. The UFBU has also announced a three-day bank strike from September 28, which comes during the banks’ half-yearly closing period.
The unions have further warned that if their demands are not met, they may begin an indefinite nationwide strike from October 26.
Online Banking Services Will Continue
Even when bank branches are closed, you can still use most digital banking services without any interruption.
Services such as UPI, mobile banking, internet banking, ATMs, and 24×7 RTGS will continue to work normally. Only branch-based services like cash deposits, cheque processing, passbook updates, and account-related paperwork may be affected.
