The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast intense showers in parts of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and nearby regions, with some areas likely to experience thunderstorms and gusty winds.

The forecast also points to heavy rainfall in parts of Andhra Pradesh and adjoining areas during the opening days of the period.

Residents, commuters and people planning outdoor activities should monitor local weather updates as conditions may vary by district.

IMD Rain Alert: States Likely to Receive Heavy Rain

According to the forecast, coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, south interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are among the regions expected to receive heavy rainfall during October 17–23.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on October 17 and 18.

Rain is also forecast in these areas from October 19 to 23, although the intensity and distribution may vary.

Northern interior Karnataka and Telangana are also expected to receive rainfall during the seven-day period.

Residents should check district-level forecasts for more precise information about the timing and intensity of showers.

Thunderstorms and Strong Winds May Affect Travel

The IMD has also forecast thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in parts of southern India during the period. Kerala, Mahe and Lakshadweep are among the areas where thunderstorm activity is expected on October 17.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema may experience thunderstorms and lightning on October 17 and 18. Strong winds are also forecast in parts of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on specified days.

Rain and thunderstorms can affect road visibility and disrupt outdoor activities. Travellers should allow extra time for journeys during adverse weather and follow local authorities’ safety instructions.

Rain Forecast for October 17 to 23

The seven-day forecast indicates that rainfall will not be limited to a single day.

Coastal and southern parts of the country are expected to see continuing rain activity, while the timing and intensity will differ across locations.

From October 17 to 23, coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, south interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal remain among the areas highlighted for rainfall.

Northern interior Karnataka and Telangana are also forecast to receive rain during this period.

For coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema, the forecast highlights heavy to very heavy rainfall on October 17 and 18, followed by further rainfall through October 23.

People in vulnerable areas should remain alert to local warnings, particularly where heavy rain could affect travel or daily routines.

What Residents Should Do During Heavy Rain

Residents should check the latest IMD forecast and local administration advisories before travelling, especially in areas expecting heavy rain, lightning or strong winds.

Avoid taking shelter under isolated trees during thunderstorms and stay away from exposed locations when lightning is active.

Motorists should drive cautiously on wet roads, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and avoid crossing flooded stretches. People should also secure loose outdoor objects when strong winds are forecast.

Weather warnings can change as conditions develop, and a state-level alert does not mean every district will receive the same amount of rainfall.

For the most relevant guidance, residents should consult official district-level forecasts and updates from the India Meteorological Department.
