State Bank of India offers an annual interest rate of 5.65% for regular customers and 6.15% for senior citizens on eligible retail fixed deposits with tenures between 180 and 210 days.

The actual interest earned depends on the amount deposited, the precise tenure, the interest payout option and the applicable rate when the FD is booked.

Senior citizens receive a higher rate on eligible deposits, which can increase their returns compared with regular customers.

SBI 180-Day FD Interest Rates

For retail domestic fixed deposits below Rs 3 crore, SBI’s published rates for the 180–210-day tenure are:

Regular customers: 5.65% per annum.

Senior citizens: 6.15% per annum.

These rates are listed on SBI’s official deposit-rate page as effective from December 15, 2025. Investors should verify the latest rate with the bank before opening a new FD because interest rates may change.

How Much Interest Can You Earn on an SBI FD?

The following are approximate illustrations for a 180-day deposit, using simple interest for estimation.

The actual maturity value may differ depending on SBI’s calculation method, exact deposit dates and the selected payout option.

For a deposit of Rs 50,000, the estimated interest at 5.65% per annum is around Rs 1,392 for a regular customer. At the senior-citizen rate of 6.15%, the estimated interest is around Rs 1,516.

For a deposit of Rs 1 lakh, the estimated interest is around Rs 2,786 for a regular customer and Rs 3,033 for a senior citizen.

For a deposit of Rs 2 lakh, the estimated interest is around Rs 5,572 at the regular rate and Rs 6,066 at the senior-citizen rate.

These calculations use the formula: principal × annual interest rate × 180 ÷ 365. They are illustrative estimates, not guaranteed maturity quotations.

A cumulative FD may calculate interest differently, including compounding, so customers should use SBI’s FD calculator or ask the bank for the exact maturity amount.

Why Do Senior Citizens Get Higher FD Returns?

Banks generally offer an additional interest-rate benefit to senior citizens on eligible domestic term deposits. For SBI’s 180–210-day tenure, the published senior-citizen rate is 0.50 percentage points higher than the regular rate.

This additional interest can be useful for retirees and older investors who prefer relatively predictable returns on savings.

However, the final amount received also depends on the investment amount, tenure, interest payout choice and applicable tax rules.

Customers should confirm the bank’s age eligibility criteria and any conditions before booking the deposit. Special deposit schemes and non-callable deposits may have different terms and rates.

Things to Check Before Opening an SBI Fixed Deposit

Before investing, customers should decide whether they need interest paid periodically or prefer a cumulative deposit that pays the accumulated amount at maturity.

They should also check premature withdrawal rules, as closing an FD before maturity may affect the interest payable and may attract a penalty under the bank’s terms.

Interest earned on a fixed deposit may be taxable according to the investor’s applicable income-tax rules.

Eligible depositors should check the current tax deduction rules and whether any declaration or documentation is required.

An SBI 180-day FD may suit people looking to park surplus funds for a short period while earning a fixed return.

Comparing the quoted maturity amount, liquidity conditions and applicable rate before booking can help customers choose an option that fits their financial needs.
