The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced a major update that will help lakhs of salaried employees across India.

Many employees face problems when an incorrect Member ID gets linked to their UAN (Universal Account Number).

This usually happens due to mistakes made by companies while creating PF accounts.

Because of this error, employees often face trouble while transferring or withdrawing PF money.

In some cases, their service history even shows jobs where they never worked.

Now, EPFO has made it possible to remove such wrong Member IDs online.

What Has Changed in the New EPFO Rules?

Earlier, employees could remove a wrong Member ID only if no PF contribution had been deposited into that account.

But under the new EPFO rules, even Member IDs with deposited contributions can now be delinked from the UAN in certain cases.

This is a major relief for employees who were stuck with incorrect PF records for years.

How to Remove a Wrong Member ID From UAN

If you see a wrong Member ID linked to your UAN, follow these steps:

Visit the EPFO portal and log in using your UAN and password

Go to the “View” section

Click on “Service History”

You will see all Member IDs linked to your UAN

Select the wrong Member ID

Click on the “D-Link” option

After this, the EPFO system will automatically check your details.

OTP Verification Will Be Required

In some cases, the request may not be accepted.

For example:

If the joining date in that Member ID is before December 13, 2016

And PF contributions have already been deposited in that account

If your request is eligible, you will need to:

Select the reason for removing the Member ID

Tick the declaration checkbox

Verify using OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number

Once completed, the request will be sent to the employer for approval.

Important Rules Employees Should Know

EPFO has also explained how requests will be processed based on the number of contributions made in the account.

If Contribution Was Made Up to 2 Times

The Member ID can be removed quickly after employer approval.

If Contribution Was Made 3 to 6 Times

If the employer rejects the request, it will be forwarded to the EPFO regional office for further review.

If Contribution Was Made More Than 6 Times

The wrong Member ID cannot be delinked through this online process.

Why This Update Matters

Incorrect PF records can create serious problems during job changes, PF transfers, and final withdrawals.

With this new online facility, employees can now correct mistakes more easily and keep their EPFO records clean and accurate without visiting offices repeatedly.
