Indian stock markets remained closed on Friday due to the Muharram holiday.

Both major exchanges, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the BSE, suspended trading across all segments, including equity, derivatives, currency derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB).

The closure also affected commodity trading platforms, with partial and full shutdowns depending on the exchange.

Commodity Markets Also See Partial Shutdown

In the commodity segment, the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) remained closed during the morning session from 9 am to 5 pm.

However, trading is set to resume in the evening session starting 5 pm.

Meanwhile, the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX), which mainly deals in agricultural commodities, stayed closed for the entire day.

This meant that most trading activity across stock and commodity markets came to a complete halt on Friday.

Next Market Holiday After a Long Gap

After the Muharram holiday, investors will have a long stretch of continuous trading.

The next scheduled stock market holiday will be on September 14 for Ganesh Chaturthi.

Other upcoming holidays include:

October 2 (Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti)

October 20 (Dussehra)

November 10 (Diwali-Balipratipada)

November 24 (Guru Nanak Jayanti)

December 25 (Christmas)

Market Performance in the Previous Session

In the last trading session, the Sensex and Nifty ended slightly higher despite profit booking in IT and metal stocks.

The Sensex gained over 100 points to close at 77,100, while the Nifty rose by 34 points to end at 24,056.

However, broader markets underperformed, with midcap and smallcap indices slipping by about 0.5 percent each.

As the Muharram holiday fell on a Friday, investors enjoyed a long weekend, with trading set to resume on Monday, June 29.
