Under the India-Austria Working Holiday Programme, eligible Indian citizens aged 18 to 30 can stay in Austria for up to 12 months, travel around the country and take up temporary employment.

The programme also allows participants to attend educational courses during their stay.

It is designed primarily to promote cultural exchange and tourism, with employment and education serving as additional opportunities rather than the main purpose of travel.

India is among 12 countries and territories covered by Austria’s Working Holiday Programme.

The arrangement gives young Indians another legal pathway to experience life, culture and workplace opportunities in a European country.

Austria Working Holiday Visa for Indians: Who Can Apply?

The programme is specifically designed for young people who want to experience another country’s lifestyle and culture while travelling.

Indian applicants must generally meet the following conditions:

Applicants must be Indian citizens aged between 18 and 30 years.

They must hold a valid Indian passport meeting the prescribed validity requirements.

They should have sufficient financial resources to cover their initial expenses in Austria.

They must have adequate health, accident and travel insurance for the entire duration of their stay.

Applicants must provide proof of a return journey or demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to purchase a return ticket.

They must also satisfy the applicable health and character requirements.

The programme is not intended for people seeking permanent employment or long-term settlement in Austria. Its primary objective is to encourage cultural exchange and international travel.

How Long Can Indians Stay and Work in Austria?

Eligible Indian participants can stay in Austria for up to 12 months under the Working Holiday Programme.

During this period, participants can travel across the country and take up temporary employment to support their expenses. They can also explore educational opportunities and attend courses.

According to the programme conditions, Indian participants can work for one or more employers for a combined period of up to six months without requiring a separate employment permit.

This provides an opportunity to gain international workplace exposure while experiencing Austrian culture and everyday life.

However, the programme should not be confused with a regular employment visa.

It does not provide a direct route to permanent employment, and work or formal education must not be the primary reason for travelling under this arrangement.

Documents Required for Austria Working Holiday Visa

Indian applicants need to prepare the necessary documents before submitting their visa applications.

The important requirements include a completed National Visa D application form and a biometric passport photograph.

Applicants must have a valid Indian passport that is not older than 10 years, has at least two blank pages and remains valid for at least three months beyond the final day of the proposed visa.

Another important requirement is comprehensive health, accident and travel insurance covering the entire stay. The minimum insurance coverage specified for Indian applicants is €30,000.

Applicants must also demonstrate sufficient financial resources to meet their initial expenses in Austria.

Additionally, they need to provide proof of transportation, such as a return-ticket reservation, or evidence that they have enough money to purchase the required tickets.

The Austrian authorities may request additional supporting documents depending on the individual application.

Austria Working Holiday Visa Fee and Application Process

Indian citizens interested in the programme can submit their applications at the Austrian Embassy in New Delhi.

The visa fee for a stay exceeding 90 days is €195 under the National Visa D category.

Applicants should prepare their documents and contact the embassy for the latest appointment and submission requirements.

They should also verify the applicable visa conditions before making flight or accommodation arrangements.

Meeting the age and nationality requirements does not automatically guarantee visa approval. Austrian authorities retain the final decision on whether an applicant qualifies for the programme.

Which Other Countries Are Included in the Programme?

India is among the 12 countries and territories with which Austria has established Working Holiday Programme agreements.

The participating countries and territories include Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Taiwan and the United States.

The programme aims to encourage young people to experience different cultures, improve language skills and gain practical exposure to life in another country.

For Indian participants, the arrangement provides an opportunity to explore Austria beyond conventional tourist visits while gaining limited international work experience.

[[H2: What Should Indian Applicants Keep in Mind?

The Working Holiday Programme offers flexibility, but applicants should understand its limitations before applying.

The visa is primarily intended for a cultural and tourism experience. Participants should not treat it as a guaranteed employment opportunity or assume that they will receive a permanent job in Austria.

They should arrange sufficient funds for their initial stay, obtain suitable insurance and carefully review the visa conditions.

The 12-month opportunity could be particularly useful for young Indians interested in international travel, cultural exchange and short-term work experience.

For those considering Europe as a destination for their first overseas experience, Austria’s Working Holiday Programme provides another option to explore.
