Missed the July 31, 2026 deadline for filing your income tax return? There is no need to panic.

Taxpayers can still file a belated ITR for Assessment Year 2026-27.

The last date for filing a belated return is December 31, 2026.

However, filing your ITR late can result in penalties, interest and the loss of some tax benefits.

What Happens If You File Your ITR Late?

The biggest impact of filing a belated return is the late filing fee.

Here are the key charges:

Late fee of ₹5,000 for taxpayers who miss the original deadline.

If your total income is below ₹5 lakh, the late fee is limited to ₹1,000.

Interest of 1% per month may apply on unpaid tax under Section 234A.

You may lose the ability to carry forward certain losses, including eligible capital losses, business losses and Futures & Options losses.

So, even though you can still file your return, delaying it could increase your tax burden or reduce the benefits available to you.

Reports suggest that a significant number of taxpayers file their ITRs after the original deadline.

Around 1.5 crore more returns were reportedly filed by the end of the previous assessment year compared with the number filed by the original deadline.

Made a Mistake in Your ITR? You Can Revise It

What if you filed your ITR on time but later discovered a mistake?

You can generally file a revised ITR to correct errors such as incorrect income details, tax calculations or missed deductions.

The revised return can be filed up to March 31 of the relevant assessment year, or until the assessment is completed, whichever comes first, subject to the applicable rules.

The revised return facility is available to taxpayers who filed their original return either on time or belatedly by December 31.

A new provision may also impose a penalty when certain revised returns are filed after December 31 and on or before March 31.

One more point to remember: if the original ITR was filed manually, it cannot be revised online.

What Is the ITR Discard Facility?

There is another option for taxpayers who have submitted an ITR but have not completed verification.

They can use the discard facility to cancel the unverified return and file a fresh return with the correct information.

This can be useful if you notice a mistake before completing the verification process.

What If You Miss the Belated Return Deadline Too?

Even if you fail to file a belated return by December 31, there may still be another option.

Under Section 139(8A), taxpayers can use the Income Tax Return-Updated (ITR-U) facility in eligible cases.

ITR-U can be used when no return was filed earlier or when certain errors need to be corrected in an earlier return.

However, filing an updated return comes with an additional tax, depending on how late it is filed.

Within 12 months from the end of the assessment year: additional tax of 25%

After 12 months but within 24 months: additional tax of 50%

After 24 months and within the applicable four-year period: additional tax of 75%

Don’t Wait Until the Last Date

Missing the July 31 deadline does not mean you have lost the opportunity to file your ITR.

However, filing as soon as possible can help you avoid additional interest and reduce the risk of losing certain tax benefits.

If you have already missed the deadline, check your tax details and file the belated return before December 31, 2026, wherever applicable.

Note: Tax rules and filing provisions can vary depending on the taxpayer’s circumstances.

Check the latest Income Tax Department rules or consult a qualified tax professional before filing or revising your return.
