State Bank of India (SBI) is set to change its cash withdrawal charges for certain Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) account holders from October 1, 2026.
Under the new rule, customers will still get four free cash withdrawals every month through the branch.
But after these four transactions, each additional cash withdrawal will cost ₹15 plus applicable GST.
Importantly, this rule does not apply to every SBI savings account.
Who Will Be Affected By The New SBI Rule?
The revised charge is specifically for eligible BSBD accounts opened through the branch channel.
BSBD accounts are designed to provide basic banking services without requiring customers to maintain a minimum balance.
For customers who frequently visit an SBI branch to withdraw cash, the new rule could increase their monthly banking expenses.
For example, if you make four branch cash withdrawals in October, there will be no charge under this new rule.
But a fifth withdrawal will cost ₹15 plus GST, and a sixth withdrawal will attract another ₹15 plus GST.
New SBI Charges Will Start From October 1
The revised charges will come into effect on October 1, 2026.
Customers who regularly make several small cash withdrawals may want to plan their transactions in advance.
Instead of making multiple withdrawals throughout the month, they can consider combining their cash requirements into fewer transactions, wherever practical and safe.
This Is Not The Same As ATM Charges
One important point is that the new ₹15 charge is related to branch cash withdrawals for eligible BSBD accounts.
It should not be confused with SBI’s separate rules for ATM transactions.
ATM withdrawal limits and charges depend on factors such as the account type, the ATM used and whether the ATM belongs to SBI or another bank.
Digital Payments Will Not Be Affected
The new charge is also not applicable to normal digital transactions.
Customers can continue using UPI, mobile banking, internet banking and other digital payment methods under the applicable rules.
Therefore, people who rarely use physical cash may see little or no impact from this particular change.
Why Is SBI Charging For Extra Withdrawals?
The banking sector has increasingly moved towards digital payments.
UPI, cards, mobile banking and internet banking have reduced the need for customers to visit branches for routine transactions.
Physical cash transactions, on the other hand, require branch infrastructure and staff.
Charges beyond a certain number of transactions can encourage customers to reduce frequent cash withdrawals and use digital payment options where possible.
Other Banks Are Also Revising Cash Rules
SBI’s move comes as several banks have been changing their cash and ATM-related rules.
For example, some banks have introduced charges or revised free transaction limits for certain ATM and cash services.
However, the rules are different for each bank and account type.
Therefore, customers should always check the specific charges applicable to their account rather than assuming that the same rule applies everywhere.
How Much Can Frequent Cash Withdrawals Cost?
The ₹15 charge may look small, but repeated withdrawals can add up.
For example, if a customer makes 10 withdrawals beyond the four free transactions, the basic charges would total ₹150, before applicable GST.
For people who frequently withdraw cash from branches, this could become a noticeable expense over the year.
Check Your SBI Account Type First
The most important thing for SBI customers is to check which type of account they have.
The new rule does not mean that every SBI savings account holder will automatically be charged ₹15 after four withdrawals.
It specifically concerns eligible BSBD accounts and branch-channel cash withdrawals.
So, before worrying about the new charge, customers should confirm whether their account falls under the revised rules.
How Can Customers Avoid Extra Charges?
If you have an eligible BSBD account, a few simple steps can help reduce additional charges.
Keep track of your monthly branch cash withdrawals.
Try to combine cash requirements into fewer withdrawals where practical.
Use UPI, cards or other digital payment methods for routine purchases.
Check your account’s latest service-charge rules before making frequent cash transactions.
SBI Cash Withdrawal Rule: Key Takeaway
From October 1, 2026, eligible SBI BSBD account holders will continue to get four free branch cash withdrawals every month.
After that, every additional withdrawal will attract ₹15 plus applicable GST.
The change is not applicable to all SBI savings account holders. It is specifically linked to eligible BSBD accounts and branch-based cash withdrawals.
For customers who depend heavily on physical cash, planning withdrawals carefully could help avoid unnecessary charges.
