The Delhi government has announced assistance equivalent to the cost of two LPG cylinders every year for ration card-holding families, with payments made around Holi and Diwali.

The assistance is transferred through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to the Aadhaar-linked bank account of the head of the family. The scheme applies to ration card holders whether they use LPG or PNG for cooking.

Diwali LPG Cylinder Scheme Eligibility

All ration card-holding families in Delhi are covered under the scheme. Importantly, the benefit is not limited to families that use LPG cylinders. Families using piped natural gas for cooking are also included.

The assistance is provided twice a year, on Holi and Diwali. A beneficiary does not have to refill an LPG cylinder in the same month to receive the assistance, according to the scheme details.

The Delhi government estimated the annual cost of the scheme at around ₹242.77 crore. The expenditure can change depending on LPG prices, central government subsidies and the number of beneficiaries.

How Much LPG Assistance Will Be Given

The amount of assistance depends on the applicable LPG subsidy. At the time the scheme was announced, PM Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries were set to receive ₹553 per cylinder after adjustment of the ₹300 central subsidy, while non-Ujjwala ration card holders were to receive ₹853 per cylinder.

Since the scheme is linked to the prevailing cylinder price and applicable subsidy, the amount can change if these factors are revised. The payment is made through DBT rather than by handing out a physical cylinder.

What Is the Current Delhi LPG Price

The source information states that a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder in Delhi costs ₹942. LPG prices can change based on government decisions and market conditions, so the amount applicable under the assistance scheme should be checked according to the latest notified rate.

The Delhi scheme is therefore better understood as financial assistance equivalent to the cost of LPG cylinders rather than a physical free-cylinder distribution.

UP Also Provides Diwali LPG Benefit

Uttar Pradesh has a separate LPG benefit for beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. The state government has provided free LPG refill assistance to eligible Ujjwala beneficiaries around Diwali and Holi.

The Uttar Pradesh benefit is different from Delhi’s scheme because it is specifically linked to Ujjwala beneficiaries, while Delhi’s announced assistance covers all ration card-holding families, including those using PNG.

Therefore, eligibility depends on the state and the particular scheme. Delhi ration card holders and eligible Ujjwala beneficiaries in Uttar Pradesh should check the applicable payment and eligibility details before expecting a Diwali LPG benefit.
