The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has launched an upgraded Unified Member Portal with several important changes for PF members.
The updated portal is designed to offer a faster, safer and more reliable experience.
However, one major change has caught the attention of users. UAN activation and new UAN generation are no longer available on the EPFO website.
These services have now been shifted to the UMANG app, where members must complete Aadhaar-based Face Authentication.

What’s New in the EPFO Portal?
After the latest system upgrade, EPFO has redesigned its Unified Member Portal and moved some services to different platforms.
While most PF-related services continue to be available on the portal, UAN-related services such as activation and new UAN generation can now only be accessed through the UMANG app.
According to EPFO, the move is aimed at improving security and strengthening identity verification using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication.
How to Activate Your UAN Now
Members can no longer activate their Universal Account Number (UAN) through the EPFO website.
Instead, follow these steps on the UMANG app:
Download and open the UMANG app.
Go to EPFO Services.
Select ‘UAN Services Through Face Auth’.
Tap ‘UAN Activation’.
Complete Aadhaar-based Face Authentication.
Follow the instructions displayed on the screen.
Once the verification is successful, your UAN will be activated.
Need a New UAN? Here’s What to Do
If you already have an EPF account but were never issued a UAN, you can now generate one through the UMANG app.
During the process, you will need to:
Verify your registered mobile number.
Enter your EPF member details.
Complete Aadhaar-based Face Authentication.
Link the newly generated UAN with your existing PF account.
This ensures that your existing PF balance remains connected to the new UAN.
Forgot Your UAN? You Can Still Retrieve It
EPFO has also simplified the process of recovering a forgotten UAN.
To retrieve it, you need to:
Enter your registered mobile number.
Upload the required identity or address proof.
Verify the OTP sent to your mobile number.
After successful verification, your UAN can be retrieved through the updated system.
Death Claim Service Remains on EPFO Portal
Although several UAN-related services have moved to the UMANG app, the death claim facility will continue to be available on the EPFO Unified Member Portal.
Before submitting a claim, beneficiaries should keep the following documents ready:
Aadhaar-linked mobile number
Bank account proof (cancelled cheque or passbook)
Death certificate of the EPF member
Date of birth proof of the beneficiary, if required
EPFO has also specified that:
Only PDF files are accepted.
Each file must be smaller than 2 MB.
File names should not contain spaces.
What Is the UMANG App?
UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) is the Government of India’s official app that provides access to a wide range of central and state government services from one platform.
With the latest EPFO update, the app has become the main platform for UAN activation and new UAN generation.
This also reduces the need for members to visit an EPFO office for these services.
What Does This Mean for PF Members?
The latest changes do not affect your existing UAN or PF balance.
They only change the platform used for certain services.
If you need to activate a UAN or generate a new one, you must now use the UMANG app.
Other services, including death claim filing, will continue to be available on the EPFO Unified Member Portal.
To avoid any issues while using EPFO services, members should ensure that their Aadhaar details, registered mobile number and KYC information are updated.
