Google is now changing how ads appear in Search by blending them with its AI system. Until now, AI features and ads were mostly separate, but that is no longer the case.
At the I/O 2026 event, Google announced that it will introduce new AI-powered ad formats using its Gemini AI model.
The goal is simple: make search results more conversational, helpful, and personalized while also improving how ads are shown to users.

AI Ads Will Feel Like Natural Answers, Not Just Promotions
Google says people using AI Mode are making faster and more confident decisions. Because of this, the company is testing new ad formats that feel more like helpful answers than traditional ads.
Instead of only showing sponsored links, Gemini will now generate responses based on what the user is asking.
For example, if someone searches for ways to make their home smell like a luxury spa, the AI may suggest ideas along with related products or services that match the query.
These new “Conversational Ads” are designed to blend into AI responses while still being clearly labeled as sponsored content.
“Highlighted Answers” Will Mix Ads with AI Suggestions
Google is also introducing a feature called Highlighted Answers in AI Mode.
When the AI shows multiple suggestions for a query, some of those results may include sponsored recommendations. These will be clearly marked as “Sponsored” so users can identify them easily.
The idea is to make ads more useful by placing them directly within AI-generated answers instead of showing them separately like traditional ads.
AI Ads Are Coming to Regular Google Search Too
Google is not limiting these changes to AI Mode. In the coming months, AI-powered ads will also appear in normal Search results.
This means even everyday searches could include smarter, more personalized ad suggestions powered by Gemini.
Shopping Ads Will Become More Intelligent
Product-related searches will also become more advanced.
If a user searches for items like a refrigerator, TV, or coffee machine, Gemini will not only show products but also explain which one might suit the user’s needs.
For example, searching for an espresso machine could bring up different models along with simple explanations of features, helping users make faster buying decisions.
Business Agent Will Act Like a Live Chat Helper
Google is also introducing a feature called Business Agent for Leads.
This works like an AI chat assistant inside Search. If someone searches for a university or service, they can directly ask questions and get instant responses.
This will help businesses connect more quickly with potential customers or students without needing extra steps.
Big Upgrade to Google Search with Gemini 3.5 Flash
Google is also improving the core Search system.
A new Gemini 3.5 Flash model is being added to AI Mode, making searches faster and more intelligent. The search box will also better understand long and detailed queries.
Users will be able to search not just with text, but also with images, videos, documents, and even Chrome tabs.
Google is also working on tools that can generate visuals, diagrams, and dashboards based on search queries.
Always-On AI Agent for Live Updates
Another major addition is an Autonomous Monitoring Agent.
This AI system will continuously track news, blogs, finance updates, and sports information. Its purpose is to keep Search updated in real time so users always get the latest information without needing to refresh or search again.
