A major change in India’s labour laws is set to benefit millions of employees. Under the Code on Wages, 2019, employers will have to pay monthly salaries by the 7th day of the following month.

The new rule aims to ensure that employees receive their salaries on time and do not face unnecessary delays.

It also brings a uniform system for wage payments across different industries.

Salary Payment Rules Explained

The new labour framework clearly defines when employees should receive their wages based on their payment schedule.

Monthly employees: Salary must be credited by the 7th day of the next month.

Weekly employees: Wages must be paid on the last working day of the week.

Daily wage workers: Payment must be made at the end of each working day.

The law also includes a rule for employees whose jobs are terminated

In such cases, employers must clear all pending wages within two working days of termination.

Uniform Definition of ‘Wages’

One of the biggest changes under the Code on Wages is the introduction of a single definition of “wages” across labour laws.

This will make it easier to calculate:

Salary

Bonus

Provident Fund (PF)

Gratuity

Other employee benefits

A common definition is also expected to reduce confusion and legal disputes between employers and employees.

Stronger Rights for Employees

The new law gives employees better legal protection against delayed salary payments.

If an employer fails to pay wages within the prescribed time, workers can approach the appropriate authorities and seek legal action.

This provision is intended to improve compliance and ensure that employees receive their earnings on time.

Part of India’s Labour Law Reforms

The Code on Wages, 2019 is one of the four labour codes introduced by the Central Government to simplify and modernise India’s labour laws.

It replaces several older wage-related laws with a single framework designed to make compliance easier for employers while improving transparency and protecting workers’ rights.

Once the code is fully implemented across all states, it is expected to benefit employees in both the organised and unorganised sectors.

What This Means for Employees

The new wage rules are designed to ensure timely salary payments and create a more transparent payment system across the country.

For monthly salaried employees, the biggest takeaway is that salaries should be paid by the 7th of every month.

At the same time, the law also provides clear timelines for weekly, daily, and terminated workers, giving employees greater financial security and stronger legal protection against delayed payments.
