The bank is developing offline payment options using the Reserve Bank of India’s digital rupee.

The planned service would allow passengers to tap their phones on HDFC Bank point-of-sale devices installed onboard aircraft.

This could make digital payments possible during flights where regular internet connectivity is unavailable.

According to the bank’s plan, the digital rupee could be used for purchases such as food and beverages as well as seat upgrades.

The initiative is part of HDFC Bank’s broader effort to develop new uses for the RBI’s central bank digital currency.

The bank is also working to integrate its digital rupee wallet with the BHIM app.

This would allow customers to make UPI-style merchant payments from their CBDC wallets, including payments through UPI QR codes.

The RBI describes the digital rupee, or e₹, as a digital form of the Indian rupee.

Its official FAQ also says that offline functionality is being explored to allow transactions in places with limited or no internet connectivity.

Digital Rupee Rewards and Gift Vouchers

HDFC Bank is developing digital rupee gift vouchers for customers.

Once issued, these vouchers are planned to be credited to the customer’s HDFC Bank digital rupee wallet and used at merchants by scanning UPI QR codes.

Credit card reward points are another planned use.

Customers would be able to redeem their points into digital rupees and use the converted value for categories including dining, fuel, apparel and electronics.

These developments could expand the ways customers use the digital rupee beyond conventional CBDC transactions, while keeping the payment process connected to participating wallets and merchants.

 Corporate Allowances Through Digital Rupee

HDFC Bank is also developing a digital rupee portal for corporate customers. Companies could use their corporate net-banking platforms to provide meal, fuel and travel allowances directly in digital rupees.

The planned system would support purpose-bound payments, meaning funds could be programmed for specific uses.

The RBI has described programmability as a feature that can restrict CBDC funds according to parameters such as merchant categories, expiry dates or other specified conditions.

HDFC Bank has said these use cases are intended to address needs around purpose-specific payments, compliance and auditability across retail and wholesale markets.

What the Digital Rupee Could Change

The proposed flight payments, reward redemptions, gift vouchers and corporate allowances show how banks are exploring different applications for India’s CBDC.

For passengers, the flight use case is particularly notable because it targets payments in situations where internet connectivity may not be available.

The planned services are part of HDFC Bank’s development of digital rupee use cases and should not be treated as a general replacement for existing payment methods.

The RBI continues to describe e₹ as legal tender and distinguishes it from UPI, which is a payment mechanism rather than a form of currency.
