Under the current October–December 2026 interest rates, an investment of ₹5 lakh in a three-year deposit at 7.1% per annum can grow to approximately ₹6.18 lakh at maturity, including an estimated ₹1.18 lakh in interest.

The scheme, commonly known as the Post Office FD, may appeal to people who prefer predictable returns over investments linked to stock market movements.

Before investing, customers should understand the interest calculation, deposit tenure and applicable tax rules.

Post Office Time Deposit Interest Rates for 2026

The Post Office Time Deposit Scheme allows investors to choose among one-year, two-year, three-year and five-year deposits. Each tenure carries a different annual interest rate.

For the October–December 2026 quarter, the rates are 6.9% for one year, 7.0% for two years, 7.1% for three years and 7.5% for five years.

These rates are set by the government and reviewed periodically. The applicable rate is determined when the deposit is opened, subject to the scheme’s rules.

₹5 Lakh Investment: Three-Year Maturity Calculation

Investors depositing ₹5 lakh in a three-year Post Office Time Deposit at an annual interest rate of 7.1% can expect the following estimated returns:

The initial investment is ₹5,00,000, and the deposit period is three years. Based on the scheme’s interest calculation, the estimated interest earned over the period is approximately ₹1,18,304.

This brings the estimated maturity amount to ₹6,18,304. The final amount depends on the applicable scheme rules and calculation method.

The figures are estimates before tax. Investors should confirm the maturity calculation with the post office before opening an account.

How Does Post Office FD Interest Work?

Interest on Post Office Time Deposits is calculated quarterly, while interest is payable annually.

This means interest is calculated using quarterly compounding, but the payment schedule differs from deposits that pay interest monthly.

Investors should not assume that the full maturity amount will be available before the selected tenure ends. The account follows prescribed maturity and premature-closure rules.

A deposit can be opened with a minimum investment of ₹1,000, and there is no overall maximum deposit limit under the scheme.

This allows people to invest according to their savings goals and financial capacity.

Is the Post Office Time Deposit Tax-Free?

Tax benefits depend on the selected deposit tenure and the investor’s eligibility.

A qualifying five-year Post Office Time Deposit may be eligible for a deduction under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, subject to applicable conditions and the chosen tax regime.

The three-year deposit does not qualify for the same Section 80C deduction.

Interest income may also have tax implications, so investors should consider their individual tax position when calculating returns.

Customers should review the premature withdrawal conditions as well. Closing a deposit before maturity may affect the interest payable, depending on the duration and applicable rules.

What Should Investors Check Before Opening an Account?

Before choosing a Post Office Time Deposit, investors should compare the available tenures, annual interest rates and maturity amounts.

A longer deposit may offer a higher rate, but it also requires keeping funds invested for a longer period.

Those seeking tax benefits should check whether the five-year option meets their financial needs and tax eligibility.

People who may need access to their money earlier should understand the withdrawal rules before committing their savings.

The scheme provides a fixed-rate savings option backed by the government, but investors should still plan according to their liquidity requirements and financial goals.

The three-year example shows how a ₹5 lakh deposit can potentially grow to around ₹6.18 lakh at the stated rate.

Customers should confirm current rates and account conditions through an authorised post office before investing.
