Customers using bank lockers may soon have to pay much higher fees.
According to the official website of HDFC Bank, the rent for safe deposit lockers has been revised across several cities in India.
The new charges will depend on two main factors — the size of the locker and the category of the bank branch.
Locker sizes include extra small, small, medium, extra medium, large, and extra large.
Branches are now divided into categories such as Metro Plus, Metro, Urban, Semi-Urban, and Rural.
The bank has also introduced a new category called Metro Plus, which includes branches in large cities where the demand for lockers is very high.
These branches will have the highest locker rents.

Locker Rent Sees Massive Increase
In many cases, locker charges have increased sharply.
For example, the annual rent for an extra-medium locker in metro cities has jumped from ₹4,400 to ₹12,500.
This means the price has increased by about 184 percent.
Similarly, the rent for other locker sizes has also gone up significantly in metro branches:
Extra small locker: ₹1,350 → ₹3,300 (about 144% increase)
Medium locker: ₹4,000 → ₹10,000 (about 150% increase)
Extra medium locker: ₹4,400 → ₹12,500 (about 184% increase)
These increases mean customers will now have to pay much higher annual charges to keep their valuables in bank lockers.
New Locker Rent Structure
Under the revised pricing, locker rents vary depending on the branch location.
Annual locker rent (excluding GST):
| Locker Size | Metro Plus | Metro | Urban | Semi-Urban | Rural |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Extra Small | ₹4,000 | ₹3,300 | ₹2,200 | ₹2,200 | ₹1,000 |
| Small | ₹7,500 | ₹5,000 | ₹4,000 | ₹3,000 | ₹2,000 |
| Medium | ₹12,500 | ₹10,000 | ₹7,500 | ₹5,000 | ₹4,000 |
| Extra Medium | ₹15,000 | ₹12,500 | ₹8,000 | ₹5,000 | ₹4,000 |
| Large | ₹20,000 | ₹15,000 | ₹10,000 | ₹8,000 | ₹6,000 |
| Extra Large | ₹40,000 | ₹20,000 | ₹15,000 | ₹10,000 | ₹8,000 |
In the Metro Plus category, rents are the highest.
For example, an extra-medium locker can cost around ₹15,000 per year, while an extra-large locker may cost up to ₹40,000 annually.
GST Will Increase the Final Cost
Customers should note that these prices do not include GST.
An additional 18 percent Goods and Services Tax will be added to the locker rent.
Banks usually collect locker charges once a year in advance, so the total payment will be the base rent plus GST.
Why Locker Charges Are Increasing
One of the main reasons behind the hike is stricter security rules in the banking sector.
Over the past few years, there have been several cases related to locker theft and security lapses.
Because of this, banks have been required to upgrade their security systems and monitoring processes.
Many branches now use Aadhaar-linked biometric verification to ensure that only the rightful customer can access the locker.
These upgrades have increased operational costs, which is one reason banks have revised locker fees.
What Customers Should Consider
With locker charges rising, customers may want to review their current locker usage.
If a large locker is being used to store only a few items, switching to a smaller locker could help reduce annual costs.
It is also important to calculate the final amount including GST before renewing the locker.
Some people may also consider alternatives such as secure home safes or insured storage options, depending on their needs.
What Bank Lockers Are Used For
A bank locker is a secure storage space provided by banks where customers can keep jewelry, property documents, important papers, and other valuables.
Since many families rely on these lockers to protect their assets, the increase in locker rent will directly affect a large number of bank customers across the country.
